Re: (no subject)

What I have heard him say is that he was misquoted. The fact is that what
we have all heard about that incident came through the media and most of us
know how that goes. The man did just receive Britain's "Man of Peace Award"
in 2004 a month after being refused entry to the U.S. because he was on the
"No-Fly" list. So, I think it is fair to say that there are conflicting
opinions of his character. The U.S. government did admit their mistake and he is
no longer on that list.

Re: (no subject)

Just weighing in, mostly because a friend sent me info re: Yusaf's new
cd and what I thought about it a few days ago. Looking thru news items
and doing a couple quickie 'searches', I came up with this bit...he's
gotten too extreme, too far away...

Yusuf Islam's own website further reveals his fundamentalist and
radical bent. It celebrates his collaboration with a notorious American
Islamist, Shaikh Hamza Yusuf [Hanson]. Hamza Yusuf was known before
September 11 for his radical preaching. In 1991, Hamza Yusuf "gave a
provoking speech about why 'Jihad is the Only Way,'" at an International
Islamic Conference held at the University of Southern California by the
local unit of the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA), a front for
the al Qaeda-allied Jama'at-i-Islami movement in Pakistan. The same Los
Angeles event was addressed by Imam Siraj Wahhaj, an unindicted
co-conspirator named in 1995 in a plot to blow up New York City
monuments..

Stephen Schwartz, an author and journalist, is author of The Two Faces
of Islam: The House of Sa'ud from Tradition to Terror. A vociferous
critic of Wahhabism, Schwartz is a frequent contributor to National
Review, The Weekly Standard, and other publications.

Yusuf

Poor Cat Stevens. On the strength of the below defense of him, I went to
catstevens.com, clicked the THINK link, and got a pop up, "Yusuf Islam: Mountain
of Light". I then click the "Islam Spiritual Domain" link and get this nice
information from him:

"Dress & Dietary Requirements
In Islam, clothing has two purposes; to cover the body and to modestly
beautify one's appearance. Men are to dress modestly, not imitating women. Women's
clothing must cover all of the body including the head, and should not be tight
or transparent.
For a Muslim, there are two types of food and drink; Halal (lawful) and Haram
(unlawful).
Unlawful, forbidden (Haram) food and drink includes:

*Meat from dead animals that died naturally through accidents [except fish],
or by strangling, falling, beating, or being killed by wild animals.
*Blood that has poured forth (as distinguished from the blood adhering to
flesh or organs).
*Flesh of swine, such as bacon or pork, including all products and
by-products (lard, pepsin, gelatin, etc.) prepared from swine. Only vegetable oil is
used for frying and in the preparation of bread, salad dressing, desserts,
muffins, other bakery products, etc.
*Food upon which any other name has been invoked, besides that of God.
*Intoxicants, including all types and varieties of alcohol and intoxicating
drugs."

Looks like it's time to get out my burkha. And I'll have to drop my
cross-dressing male friends immediately if I'm to hang out with Yusuf.

Re: Yusuf p.s.

I started my post with:
>>Poor Cat Stevens. <<
By that first sentence, I meant "poor guy, he's been treated mean by the
media regarding the Rushdie matter" but I didn't write the rest of the post in an
order that made the first sentence make sense. Sorry about that.

Also, as for the other post where someone wrote:

The "only way" -- well, "Jihad is the only way" that Muslim menfolk are going
to get some of us into burkhas - by force, in my case!

Re: Yusuf

Girl, can you feel my love? I too did a butt-load of reading once I got
the first post, and I'm so glad that folks are not jumping my or anyone
else's crap about posts. We get to have opinions, and it's been
wonderful to get so many different points of view. We're a diverse
little group I believe, but there's so much universal about us, I'm glad
there's not been anything divisive enough to make us be mean to each
other. I check out youtube.com pretty regularly, and it never ceases to
amaze me just how many people out there in cyberland simply log on to be
evil to other people. Now, don't get me wrong, I put the EEEE! in Evil,
but only to those loved ones of mine that are SO derserving. I couldn't
imagine even posting anonymous ugliness about people I don't even know!

Anyway, I love it when out little list comes alive, and generally, it's
due to someone posting something a bit controversial or topically
energized, then it's off to the races! Truly, I read every post and
like you all...I really really do!

Thanks!

I don't know what made you start talking about people logging in to be evil
to others. I made a point to say at the end of my post that I was not attacking
anyone, just listing my thoughts from reviewing the website of Cat Stevens
and trying to have some humor. I had liked his a music a lot as a teenager.
There's a lot I remember about that time period and reading about eastern
religions including Hinduism, and some of my friends were reading Siddhartha, and Cat
Stevens was on the radio. It is a bit of a downer to me that after that
open-minded period, he went down the path of strict fundamentalism, including that
of how women should dress, but I also think he is in a position to help a lot

Re: Yusuf

ohmygosh Mary, I'm sorry you've misunderstood my meaning, as well as my
own convoluted typing made me sound like I was speaking about your post,
BUT THAT'S NOT THE CASE. Ohmygoodness, I'm sorry for making you feel
like I was commenting on your posts, but NO, I was referring to my time
spent on "youtube.com", and the evil postings that I keep reading there.
Not your post about Yusef, or for that matter, any Sibling posts. I've
not experienced the 'evil' I referred to with the Siblings, but rather
on youtube.com. People log on there simply to watch someone else's
video posts, then make horrid and evil comments, when it would make more
sense to just not watch the vids that you know you'll dislike!

Please know that I never meant anything about your posts, in fact, I
meant to be positive about the list 'coming alive' periodically. And
also, please don't let me or any other mush-mouth out there cause you to
not post or respond to others. No one is worth keeping you quiet! I
truly hope you understand that I never meant to speak out against
anything anyone here posts.
