2003 Helen Verger Award to Jane!!!

Good morning dear family...

According to the small print in Jane's bio on the Ottawa Folk Festival
website (http://www.ottawafolk.org/) our Jane is this year's recipient of
this award! (But according to Garnet Roger's website, he is too - maybe
it's a boy/girl thing...)

The award was instituted to honour the memory of the late Helen Verger,
co-owner of Rasputins coffeehouse, mother of Dean Verger, and a friend
to many in the Ottawa folk community. Helens generosity and love of
music embodies the spirit of the CKCU Ottawa Folk Festival, and the award
is a fitting tribute to a woman who did much to foster the local folk
scene.

Cool.

Just when was she a boy?

Dear Sibs

I was listening to "When I was a Boy" last eve,
and didn't come upon a reference to her being a boy in any of the tunes.
Is there one? If not, any guesses as to why it's called
When I wozza boy
?

cheers,

Bruce

RE: Just when was she a boy?

Two theories:

1) Songwriter as storyteller: "Back when I was a boy . . ." While a
direct narrative approach have never been the route that Siberry has
taken, all of these songs could be regarded as little stories
(especially "The Vigil (The Sea)" and "At the Beginning of Time"). Thus,
the title is a nice framing device to put the songs into perspective. Do
they need to be particularly autobiographical, or can the approach be
fictional, more mythic. Siberry as archetypal poet. As an album replete
with references to temples, saints, seas, and angels, maybe it's meant
to be seen as an epic.

2) The artistic persona as a mask: Again, it's all a fiction. She's even
dressed up in what looks like Queen of the Nile drag on the cover -- and
extreme contrast to the straight-haired country lass from the cover of
the previous album, and the spiky punk 'do featured in the photos of the
albums before that. Each song has a very different texture and feel to
it, different producers notwithstanding. Who is Jane Siberry anyway?

Who is Jane Siberry anyway?

I'm not sure I really want to know! She is by a long shot, my favourite
musical artist and while I attend every local performance possible, I'd
just as soon not really get to know her persoanlly . This way, when
speckless skies and lilies come my way, they are a total shift from the
Mimi's and Ingrids I've come to know and love. This way, I get to have my
own experience of her offerings as opposed to being influenced by too
many intimate facts. Afterall...

Love is everything.

RE: Just when was she a boy?

Thanks again!

"...Yessir, way back
when I was boy...,
we used to walk 17 miles through the snowstorms to.... well... uh...
'cause we were bound by the beauty, y' see...."

While that is a very general frame,
"When we all were boyz....,"
the album overall strikes me as Jane's most personal & intimate,
i.e. particular,
and very much in the sorrowful present.

RE: Just when was she a boy?

well put!

when i was a boy, we had to listen to easily-warped vinyl discs with
grooves! and not the good kind of groove! we had to walk forty miles
in the snow to get a new stylus!

I've seen copies of Anthology up there go for pretty cheap, and right
now there's some copies of the "Can't Rain All the Time" remix single,
the "Temple" remix single, some of the RealWorld releases and other
stuff.

Has anyone bought stuff off there?

Well, I've bought some Sib CD's from half.com (which is part of ebay).
Sometimes you can get them vachement cheap-- tho you have to remember to
factor in the cost of shipping.

Re: sib items for sale on ebay

I've bought items off Ebay. You can get a bargin, but you have to factor in
the exchange rate, and shipping.

You also have to look to see, some vendors don't or can't sell outside the
US, even into Canada.
