MEMORABILIA. COLLECTING SOUNDS WITH... William Bennett. Part I #podcast

*MEMORABILIA. COLLECTING SOUNDS WITH... William Bennett. Part I*

Link: http://bit.ly/tLaof9

MEMORABILIA. COLLECTING SOUNDS WITH… seeks to break through to unearth and
reveal private collections of music and sound memorabilia. It is a
historiography of sound collecting that reveals the unseen and passionate
work of the amateur collector while reconstructing multiple parallel
histories such as the evolution of recording formats, archiving issues, the
collecting market and the evolution of musical styles beyond the
marketplace.

From the outset, *William Bennett*'s career has steered clear of the
simplicity of transparency in favour of double or triple readings that
invite listeners to delve further. The name of the group he founded in
1980, Whitehouse, was chosen as a sarcastic tribute twice over: on one
hand, it refers to ultraconservative activist Mary Whitehouse, and on the
other, to a homonymous pornographic magazine published in the United
Kingdom in the seventies. Although this is just one example, this kind of
subtext is a constant element that has been present throughout a career
that could be compared to an audible Rorschach test. Bennett’s artistic
oeuvre is a network of myths, taboos and bête noires designed to pull
listeners (sometimes by force) out of their natural comfort zone. Not only
through noise, but also metaphors, symbols and twisted uses of sound and
words. And this particular approach to understanding the creative act or
collective catharsis is reflected, almost down to the last point, in
Bennett’s obsessions as a music collector.

In spite of the huge variations in cultural contexts, timeframes and even
functions, his four main areas of interest (twentieth century avant-garde,

Low pH Wild Kingdom

Tonight's Wild Kingdom starts with a couple of Sheffield chestnuts from
TAGC and LFO (they were from Leeds, but they put Sheffield's Warp
Records on the map big time). The pH gets progressively lower,
culminating in a set from DJ DB, founder of SM:)E Communications,
featuring classic Cologne acid from the mid 90's. He's the DJ of the
month for December. If you want to know about last week's set, try
http://www.kfjc.org/music/playlist.php?i=39499 .

"The Wild Kingdom" airs on KFJC-FM 89.7, Friday Night/Saturday Morning,
10P-2A (6A-10A GMT). Potential listeners outside the San Francisco Bay
area can find a webcast at http://www.kfjc.org/netcast/index.php .
Present and past Wild Kingdom playlists are also archived at kfjc.org.
You can also check out archived playlists from my first KFJC show "Just
Desserts" that was on Fridays 10P-2A from 1992 through 1999. Archived
playlists exist for that show starting from Fall 1995 to New Year's Eve
1999/2000, so you can see what what I'm up to these days is pretty much
consistent with what I was up to all along.

If you do tune in (especially via the web), please take a little time to
let me know your locale. I'm also interested in promo music from all
over and in promoting local (San Francisco Bay area) techno-type events.
If you want to do some promotion for an event, contact the KFJC
promotions department at promo <at> kfjc.org to arrange ticket giveaways
and/or to send information for inclusion in our concert outlook. Thanks
to those who have sent promo music so far.

Regards,

Richard Hester

Aria Rostami - Uniform : Out Now

http://www.audiomoves.com/label.htm

THE ARTIST
Coming from San Francisco, Aria Rostami's music shares the same ebb and flow
of his hilly and foggy city. Although very conceptually driven, Rostami's
work tends to vary in mood and genre from song to song... a true lover of
music rather than genre. His current work focuses on taking risks and facing
change. Rostami has created ambient pieces for installations and produced
scores for films.

UNIFORM
Uniform is a "remix album" and a follow up to my debut album Form. Form was
about the deconstruction of sound while Uniform is about the reconstruction
of it. Although the album contains only three proper remixes, the five new
original tracks were guided by the spirit of a remix album. The songs were
put together mostly by constructing field recordings, randomly recorded
piano parts, and so on to create source material and then combined afterword
to create songs. The new tracks were created to have some parallelism with
the remixes. Uniform discovers the differences within similarities.
Uniformity is nothing more than an idea; a force that turns and breaks from
human lens to human lens.

Track listing:

01. Midori
02. Tokyo
03. Cleare (Ollie Bown Remix)
04. White
05. Streetlights As Fairgrounds (Saine Remix)
06. Memorium: The Choir

Hey guys,

It's been ages since I posted but I thought some of you might be interested in our SoundCloud page
http://soundcloud.com/soundhacker-uk.

We've finally got round to getting our back catalogue of tracks up there, including a recording of a John
Peel show we were played on which we found in our archive over the weekend - nice bit of nostalgia :)

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Cheers
