dubstep, whatnot

grabbed some 'rusko' per someone else's insistence (was it you?!) online
that i simply must hear dubstep... actually it was not at all what i
expected, i actually rather enjoyed all of it but we'll see how long it
stays in rotation :)
my impression was basically that of oldskool electro and lower tempo early
dnb stuff, with an emphasis on the whole dubby bassline and reggae type
synth leads and/or catchy hooky samples-- it's obvious where the popularity
of the music comes from.
ah the flying lotus tho, that was so nice, very raw, live sounding, subtle
grooves with addictively skewed/jilted hiphop beats, blissfull relaxing
jazz/hiphop samples, just all around relaxing, slightly dark.

Re: dubstep, whatnot

I very much enjoy Flying Lotus, and am Dubstep obssesive. Rusko has always been hit and miss for me. I
remember once you posted, "Since when is Dubstep IDM?" I didn't respond, but now I will! ;) Check out
Burial, Floating Points and Joy Orbison.

Re: dubstep, whatnot

I will check out Floating Points and Joy Orbison. I have tried to dig on
Burial but it just sounds like really sleepy rehashes of 2-step which is
cool, but i dunno, didn't really connect with it. I really liked what I
heard from Mount Kimbie, do you have any suggestions of stuff in that vein?

Re: dubstep, whatnot

I am very unfamiliar with Mt. Kimbie....I've heard the 'Maybes' Track, which is really good. But, I can't
make any recomendations.

Re: dubstep, whatnot

for mount kimbie, check out the sketch on glass ep. also, if you haven't
heard it, the 5 years of hyperdub is a solid 2 disc comp featuring some of
the best dubstep out there today (zomby, joker, martyn). the new joy orbison
remix of four tets 'love cry' is a good track, james blake is good stuff,
especially his recent rmx of untolds "stop what you're doing". spkng of
untold the 2 disc 'gonna work out fine' release is great. 2562 has a new
release 'unbalance' that im rly digging.

those are some solid starting points.

Re: dubstep, whatnot

There is a lot of "idm-ish" dubstep, Joy Orbinson is really good, so is
Boxcutter and Burial. I am not a huge dubstep enthusiast but I do like to
dabble. I feel that Rusko, Caspa, the big wobbly names are good, but in
certain environments. You can't chill and listen to Rusko, you can chill and
bang out some Burial.
