TG500

I've got a TG77 that I like, but the display is going. As far as I
know, the SY77, TG77, SY85, and SY99 could share sounds. But I just
read that the 1U TG500 can read SY85 files. Does this mean it would
also work with TG77 sounds?

No. TG500 has no FM synthesis capabilities. If a TG77 sound were pure AWM
architecture, guess it could work (never tried, so surely can be proved
wrong)

This begs the question as to whether the Dx100 is "Cuter" than the Dx7 - not something I would have thought was a factor - I have to say I am quite attached to my Dx100 - I never seem to suffer from half the failures the Dx7 does  - perhaps that's the chronology of the technology - but it just seems to be a cute little workhorse that suffices for Dxing and has the advantage of being a keytar too.

Jellinghaus DX-Programmer for DX-7?

Does anyone have a Jellinghaus DX-Programmer for the DX-7?

I am wondering if they work well.

I would like to get a closeup image of the front panel, to see what all the functions are.

Any idea what sort of data the DX-Programmer outputs in relation to movements of it’s pots and switches?

I am wondering if it could be cloned using the MIDIBox open platform?

Thanks,
Simon

Re: Just got another dx7, it's not working right..

Hi Andrew,

I just went through a similar situation with a DX7II. The synth lit
up, the display showed some of what it should have, but either nothing
or wierd sounds came out when the keys were pressed. Enough of the
synth was working that I thought that it was worth trying to fix so I
bought it. At home when I looked at it I found that the backup battery
inside had died which means that the internal memory had lost its
contents and was full of random junk when the synth was powered on. I
replaced the battery, reinitialized the synth and reloaded the
patches. All is good now. I have loaded the contents of the ROM cart
that came with the synth and am now working on figuring out how to
download patches from my computer.

I would suggest that you check the battery in your synth. If it is bad
then replace it and reinitialize the memory and reload the patches.

This was my first experience with a DX7 and I found that the
imformation and links on these 2 pages to be very useful.

Hope this helps,

Dave

Re: Jellinghaus DX-Programmer for DX-7?

The best picture that I have found is at
http://www.synrise.de/images/jms-dx-programmer.jpg

It says here
http://www.sequencer.de/moogulatorium/moogulatorium_specials.html#Anchor-ein-49575
that the box sends strings of SysEx codes via MIDI.

Looks like a neat toy.

Re: Jellinghaus DX-Programmer for DX-7?

My experience with sending real-time parameter values to the DX7 has
been that if you send the usual sysex midi data, the voice will reset
every time, causing a stutter in the sound if the parameter values get
changed while you are playing a note. The DX7II didn't have this
problem, and can have it's parameter values changed while being played
without any real problems. In order to tweak parameters real-time on
the original DX7 without problems, you can use an undocumented
command. This lets you send midi commands to it that will mimic front
panel button presses. Only problem is, to tell it to change a
parameter value by a value of 20 would require telling it to pretend
that the + or - button was pressed... twenty times! At several bytes
per "press", the data adds up fast. Which means you can't update
values very fast. This undocumented command is also on later DX series
instruments, and is documented on them.

I gave up doing real-time control on my original, and went to a DX7II,
using this:
http://img56.imageshack.us/img56/4961/protostrip2small29zx.jpg

If anyone wishes to know the commands for mimicing button presses on
the DX7, I can look up the info.
