TX802 noise issue

Since there's been a bit of talk about the TX802 lately, especially with regards to replacing the old capacitors, I thought I'd ask if anyone's had the same issue I have.

My machine recently started outputting (on stereo outs, headphones and individual outs) a low-level and digital-sounding noise, as if many notes were going on and off at once.
The noise/notes will change both over time and depending on which patches are selected, which initially had me thinking it must be a chip and therefore unfixable unless I find another TX802. However after testing a little I realized that any notes played via MIDI do not seem to be affected by the noise (they will play normally and louder than the noise) and also if I turn all 8 voices off the noise doesn't change, so maybe it actually is a capacitor issue?

I paid a Yamaha dealer too much money to have a look at and and tell me it's unfixable, without actually being able to tell me which components were the issue.

Anyone experienced something similar (the dealer assured me he had and that was the end of the line for his TX802) and had any luck repairing? I love the sound of this machine so would happily pay to get it recapped if that would fix it.

TX802 Patches

I uploaded the sysex dumps from the rare TRC-03 ROM cartridge Yamaha made for the TX802 to the YamahaBlackBoxes group. There are 1-32 and 33-64 voices and 1-64 performances all configured to use the internal banks. This cartridge is labeled Percussion and S.E. As we know FM drums and cymbals are usually pretty lame. Some of the electric toms and of course the bells and chimes are outstanding. The special effects are neat using the pitch envelopes and FM trickery.

I'm looking for more patches for this beast. If Ian is still out there can I post your work??? I have some ideas for a few new banks I just need some time. I realize that any of the gazillion DX7 voice patches can be loaded but it's the performances and function parameters that make the TX802 the Yamaha black box that it is.

Sorry for the YBB cross post, Fran

tx802 success

did a full Power supply re-cap on my tx802 today, the first time I've attempted anything of the sort (the most desoldering i've done prior to this is switching out the CR2032 on this and my YS200 for a holder).

I also got a TON of rust off the chassis with some baking soda paste.

For the corroded outputs I used Caig Industries De-Oxit, we'll see if it gets much corrosion off.

In any case, I didn't break it! It turns on and sounds EFFING GREAT! I'm very very excited!

The power supply still gives off an electrical smell, though not a burning one. It smelled this way before the re-cap, too. Almost like a tube amp smell. Is this natural as the synth heats up or should I worry?

Mo P.

Real-Time Control of DX11 Synths using an iPad

Dear Dxers

Having previously posted some files that enabled using an iPhone to be used as a control surface for remotely tweaking patch parameters on a Yamaha DX11, I have recently done the same on an iPad. I have also posted a zipped file with the details on how this can be done.

Best Regards,

Eb

Hi, they are in customs right now. I'm expecting (hoping?) to have them
in hand by the weekend.

Re: MIDI pedals for PC messages

Hello Paul,

Thanks for the clarification as to the limitation of the MIDI implementation of the DX7II. The pedal you suggested is also a good alternative! Greetings, Eb

Hi Eb,

A Kurzweil can assign a pedal switch to program up or down, the DX7II not.
The only solution is by sending a program change by a midi footcontroller:
P.C. 1~ 32 = internal performances, P.C. 33~64 = cartridge performances.

MIDI pedals for PC messages

Dear DXers,

Has anybody used a MIDI pedal/pedalboard for switching patches in real-time performance using a DX synth ? I am looking at using a minimalist setup using one keyboard only and calling single and performance patches during performance using a MIDI pedal. Any suggestions on how to do this and what kind of pedals could be used would be appreciated.

Have a look at Jordan Rudess using a Kurzweil K2600 as his sole keyboard:

Thanks,
Eb
