Squeezeslave Squeezelite Squeezeplay, oh my!

I know this is a lot to ask, but maybe a good reply would make a nice
stickie.

As somebody reading through these forums for the first time and a newbie
to Squeezebox, can someone give the history of all the various Linux SB
replacement products? Which are old, which are new, which replace older
ones? What is the preferred setup these days if you have no legacy
hardware to speak of (only the FLAC,MP3, WAV music waiting to be
heard!). Wikipedia is so matter-of-fact, so it's difficult to gain
perspective from those articles.

Thank you.

Design my Squeezebox setup?

Newbie here. Never used Squeezebox before but have used Windows, Linux,
etc for years. My video/PVR apps of choice are SageTV and XBMC, so I'm
somewhat familiar with the genre and concept.

I have a huge collection of FLAC files (album rips + CUE file) on a
Windows XP "server" which acts as my Sage Server and main repository of
all my media, including FLAC and various MP3 song files. It is
connected to a gigabit switch and I have the whole house wired for
CAT6.

My desire is be able play music through two different stereos in the
house. Both are full component setups with receivers that support
S/PDIF, have external speakers, etc. I assume I want to run the LMS
Windows version on my existing WinXP server and then utilize some small,
low powered squeezebox enabled players at the receiver. I can use one
of the apps on my iPad for a remote. Yes? Is it that simple?

Assuming I don't need the LCD display of an actual Squeezebox Classic or
Touch, are the various Linux options just as functional? Is there one
more preferred than another? What is the recommended "Beginner's
starter kit" in April 2013? Thank you.

Time (clock) issues since power failure

a few nights ago we had an extended power outage, and my desktop -- also
the Logitech Media Server crashed. when power was restored my system
clock had been set way back to 2001 and i had to go through and update
the time.

since then, I have been having wierd issues with my Boom and Radio.

Boom shows time an hour behind, but the alarm goes off consistent with
the boom's clock
Radio shows the correct time, but the ALARM goes off an hour behind
schedule.

i've powered down both boxes and reconnected them to no avail.

thoughts?

New / 1st Squeezebox Touch

Hi all,

I've just bought and hooked up my first SB Touch. The first thing it
did when I connected to the network was prompt me to do a Software
Update. Is this update going to turn my Touch into a UESmartradio, or
will I still be able to use it as a SB Touch? There does not seem to
be an option for me to back out of the Software Update screen. My
understanding so far is that it is preferable to stick with the original
Squeezebox service, rather than dumbing down to the UESmartradio
service; is this correct?

Thanks,

Sean

mp3 320 kbps on SB classic

Hi all,

Just a quick question,

there is some music I like to listen to occasionally but am having
difficulty in finding in flac downloads ( Achillea - Nine worlds and
Amadas Estrellas ) the CD`s for these are available but can be expensive
for something I am going to rip to flac and then put away.

So, seen an mp3 site that does 320 downloads for a very reasonable price
and was wondering if this will sound reasonable through the classic?
also do I just add to my library as is or would I have to have a
seperate "MP3 music folder?

as usual any help advise appreciated..

thank you..

Squeezebox Classic - No Audio

Morning all,

yesterday I turned on my SB to listen to some music and there was no
audio, although I had listened to it the day before. I changed the
Ethernet cable and the optical and re-started all to no avail. I
checked I had audio on the amp by playing a CD...worked fine. So
eventually googled and found how to re- set the SB by pressing 1 and
turning back on....at last Audio back on and all is well again until ?

So, I was just wondering , does this happen often with the SB and did I
do the right thing by re- setting it? Seems strange how its only been
set up a few days and start getting problems.

Any tips appreciated

Thanks all

Multi-room application for multi channel music for special needs kids. Help?

Hi,

I'm working with a old, established children's non-profit that helps
special needs kids, many with behavior issues. Here's what I have-

We have a large house that has been broken down into eight different
dining rooms for the differenent groups of kids. We might have staff in
one dining room, behavior issue 12 y.o. olds in another, and teen agers
in another. Is there a way to pipe different music into each of these
rooms, if need be? ie The behavioral kids might need calming, low-key
music; the adults maybe classical or jazz; and others might want R&R.
The dining room admin has a laptop she can use.

If you were to configure this system, how would you do it? Is it
possible to have different music spread out or would it be tricky.
Simplest solution? Mosst cost effective solution?

Thanks for your help!

playing m4a files

I've ripped all my music to Apple lossless MPEG-4/.m4a files, my
squeezeboxes (touch and radio) played both fine while the files were on
a pc but I moved them to NAS and I can't work how to get them to play,
or whether they'll play at all.

I -think- I need to get squeezecenter to compress them before sending to
the player, which defeats the purpose of having lossless.

Is there anything I can do or do I have to re-rip to FLAC? (which would
mean using different music software to itunes, which I'm used to. I
tried something else and it took ages to rip!)

Oldie/Newbie needs help reconfiguring set-up. Damn MP3tunes.com!

Hello. I have had a Duet for years and have had very few issues with
it. It's hooked to my network router and a receiver that provides music
to my whole house.
I have also ripped over 2000 cd's and uploaded them all to MP3tunes.com.
That was the easiest way to listen to my collection through the Duet
(or at any other location.)
Now that mp3tunes has gone belly-up (and took my money), I need a new
way to listen to my collection.
1) I could upload to another cloud, but it doesn't appear that there are
any SB Apps for itunes, amazon, google, etc.
2) I could also change the default Duet library from mysqeezeserver to
my computer, but then I'd have to leave my PC on all the time. So, my
preferred option I think is
3) buy and install an independent storage drive/player that I could
connect to my network from which the Duet will pull music.
I've tried researching "media server" but I don't think this is the
correct item. (I don't want another "link" from the media to the
player. I want to hook up a harddrive to my network, leave it on and
forget about it, from which my Duet will be able to play tunes.) This
may be a NAS, but, as I said, I am a newbie to this kind of thing. More
importantly, I would prefer a drive/player/nas for which someone has
made an App for the Duet - allowing for easy navigation. Any
suggestions would be truly appreciated. Thanks.
