Piezo Tunomatic opinions

Hey gang,

Well, I wasn't really looking for one, but was in Guitar Center the other day and they had an almost-new Brian
Moore i2(? I think) Les-Paul type with 13-pin in great shape-- not a scratch. $499. I have a Yamaha G-50 that
I use with a strat-like and bolt-on hex pickup that does fine, but figured having a built-in would be nice,
and after playing the guitar I fell in love with how it plays and sounds at least with the mag pickups. I'd say
it's worth $499 even if it didn't have the piezo/13-pin. That turned out to be a good thing, because once I
got it home I found there's a problem.

I was able to do a quick check of the 13-pin function in the store using a Roland modelling amp that had a 13-pin
input. I didn't know how to check the piezos out but it seemed to work otherwise so I bought it.

I discovered once I figured out the piezo situation at home that the low E string was faint-- clearly the
piezo wasn't working there. So I checked out the insides, discover they use the RMC saddles and circuit
board, but after closer inspection I found that the saddle itself was the problem-- the wire looks like it
was glued on in some special way to the piezo component, not soldered, using some dark gray colored
material. So the piezo feature and the associated 13-pin is rather out of commission at the moment.

The guitar was still far cheaper than a new one, and given how cheaply made the RMC saddles appear to be, I
figure it's worth replacing the bridge-- but I'm thinking I'd rather not use another RMC given how it's made.

However, I'd rather not replace the 13-pin circuit board if I can avoid it, and I'd like to know what
tuneomatic piezo bridge would be the best replacement. You can buy a set of RMC saddles (just the saddles,
to put in an existing tuneomatic bridge) for about the same price as a Fishman tuneomatic and a Graph Tech is
about $60-$70 cheaper than either of those. I thought about perhaps seeing if I can get a single
replacement saddle out of RMC, and I'll check into that, but given they say "matched set" I suspect they may
say no and expect me to pay $250 for a set, at which point I'd rather buy a better bridge for about the same price.

So these are the questions I'm ending up with:

Possible Spam coming from midiguitar group mail

Hey midiguitar brothers and sisters;
I believe a possible spam master has been using midiguitar group to send a possible dangerous open or save download..
It seems to appear when I open an email from the group.
It reads;
Do you want to open or save default_179583-1.js(545 bytes) from cdn.fastclick.net?
After a little research, and trying to find this site, or whatever it is, I have learned that this type of mail
has been known to include viruses, so if it is hapening to you, don't open it.
My knowledge on this type of thing is less than my knowledge of midi, before joining this group, which is a
major reason to bring this to everyones attention.  I am graeful for all of your wisdom and willingness to
share it.
If anyone has any other info about this issue, please let me know.
Thanks;
Ian

Re: using a roland GR 1 to transcribe

Hi:

I have a GR-1, I've done recording but seldom direct transcriptions. I
find it very hard to do transcriptions because you have to: 1. play
every note perfectly and 2. play along with the metronome.

I've had more success with recording with high ticks/measure and say 60
bpm to just record to clock time. Then that can often be re-worked to
reconstruct what was done.

With the GR-1, I've found it helps to tune the low E and A string a bit
sharp, it helps detection for some reason. This is another problem with
transcriptions, the time should start with the first glitch rather than
the first note.

For serious transcription work I recommend the Ztar, it's the way to go.

Re: Possible Spam coming from midiguitar group mail

Hi Ian,

doing a Google search for
[ default_179583-1.js (545 bytes) cdn.fastclick.net ]
( this link brings you there: http://tinyurl.com/c6uvpfn )
all findings suggest an already existing infection on your computer might be the cause for this to occur.

I guess that's where you might have to investigate now.

To narrow down your assumption "a possible spam master has been using midiguitar group" let me put these
questions:

Do you use your Yahoo e-mail adress only
1) for the midiguitar group or
2) for other e-mail traffic as well?

If 2) applies, do you have these occurences only with mails from the midiguitar group?

I myself use basically never my webrowser to do my e-mail online but use Outlook Express instead, which runs
in the "restricted zone". Thus any *.js (JavaScript) files, or any scripting commands embedded in the
e-mail, won't be executed and cannot pose a risk.

Apart from that when I browse the web I disable "Active Scripting" and "ActiveX" most of the time and switch
them on only when I really need them to display a specific website or navigate there if it doesn't go
without. (This is in using Internet Explorer and adjusting the "Internet Options".)

That's a bit of clicking to change the settings on and off but most websites load way faster and with much less
advertizing etc. and it is quite a bit safer.

BTW I don't see the connection why "Danny is moved to moderated posts for now" by Joel. Was there anything

Fulvio:

Joel's patch viewer, the factory patches and some other sets were uploaded to the midiguitar2 storage
pages - you are invited to upload your own patches there. You'll have to join the group.

Re: using a roland GR 1 to transcribe

Fulvio,

There really is no reliable setting/patch on the GR-1 which will accurately deliver
notation without glitches. The Ztar is a better choice as Joel recommends.
