Roland Gk-2A

I really wanted a synth

and I invest money in the GR-30 and the gk-2a pickup

I am very frusterated with this pick up

honestly I think it is junk.

Is there any way to adjust the sensitivity of the individual
poles of the pick up.

the problem is the high is string is super loud and the
middle g string is doesnt sound very good at all.

Was wondering if anyone is familiar with these synth and can
advise me.

RE: Roland Gk-2A

An extra quiet isolated string usually means a problem with the GK cable or
a weak connection. Try jiggling it around. You'd be surprised how often
problems are caused simply by a bad cable. GK cables often develop shorts
because the wires are very thin. You need to baby them. In a used product
such as this, you have to always be suspicious about the cables.

Other than that you have to find the best compromise pickup height and
adjust the string sensitivities inside the GR-30.

Every time you adjust the action on your guitar you will have to also adjust
the GK height.

One of the reasons people use piezo pickups is it removes one extra variable
in setting up a system (the pickup height adjustment).

First off, I'd buy a spare cable - they're cheap enough and it's
always a good idea to have a spare, just in case one goes down in the
middle of a gig. If your problem is the original cable, then buy a
second one as a spare.

Assuming you have the pickup mounted correctly (as per the instruction
book) there's little more you can do about sensitivity in any physical
sense, since the pole pieces are not adjustable, merely the pickup
height. Any further adjustment has to be made within the GR30 itself.

Although I've never had a GR30, I have owned other Roland guitar
synths and the range of adjustment on all of them has been more than
adequate to accommodate any differences in output level from

Sorry,

Started with music and computers about 30 years ago. Some program
named Guido's hand, and was running on a computer in Hawaii that was
communicating with a computer in Chicago, I believe. I've only been on
a Mac about probably 18 years - 1989 seems to stick in my head. I
switched from an Amiga to a used Mac 400 , and shortly thereafter got
an SE 30, I must have gotten distracted typing the original message.

My main concern remains burning an eprom in Thailand. I've found no
one who has the foggiest idea of what I'm talking about, or who knows
who to talk to, or cares in the least. That's Thailand!

Re: Axon NGC-66 upgrade to V.5.23 + more on Axon

Hi Jeffrey,

I just did a Google search for [eprom +Thailand] (no brackets) and
for sure SOMETHING should be there.

I guess you'll have to mail your EPROM + BIN file somewhere if in
your vicinity no-one knows about it.

I found one US company http://www.eetools.com/ which has a
distributor in Bankok <hvt <at> loxinfo.co.th> They are building
eprommers. Maybe these guys can help you either themselves or by
pointing you to someone they know.
(http://www.eetools.com/ -> Where to buy -> Other Countries ...)

http://se-ed.net/mpu51/eprom/eprom.html - they are in Bankok.

http://www.sivava.com/distributor.html shows Thailand distributors...

So if there are distributors of eprommers in Thailand there must be
people buying and using them...

Sometimes, if you're not sure where a company, of which you have a
weblink, is located, you can find out background details or contact
data through http://whois.domaintools.com/ - performing a "Whois
Lookup" - sometimes you can proceed from there via
"AboutUs: Wiki article on ..." and get further details.

Other alternative could be if someone here in the midiguitar group
has the facilities to burn your Axon v5.23 bin file into an EPROM
"M27C1001-12 from ST, or any similar type from other manufacturer",

AXON MKII Firmware Upgrade

Hey Everyone,

I finally took the plunge and bought an AXON MKII and I think it's a
very nice unit. Different in many regards than my GI20/XV2020 combo as
well as the GR33. I see good things in the future with this midi unit!

I received it with 5.02 version of the firmware installed, and would
like 6.08 on the unit. I ran the latest editor and clicked download
firmware, select the included 6.08 file and it appears to send all the
firmware code. However the unit never indicates to 'Restart' on the
LCD display. I have tried several times, but it stays at 5.02

Any ideas?

Ron

The instructions are very important. You must use the instructions
that come with the gr-30 manual. If you got it used, and it didn't
come with a manual, you need the manual. You can download one online,
I think. Any gr-30 users here who could help with that?

Re: Roland Gk-2A

There is one other remote possibility - which I hesitate to bring up, but since it actually happened to me it
has some validity.

I ordered and installed a GK3 kit into a G202 guitar. When it came time for testing it performed flawlessly
... except that I couldn't get a signal out of the 4th string. I tried tweaking the signal strength on the
GR50. I tested the cable. I took the circuit board out and reassembled all the connections. Finally, I did a
simple continuity test of the individual hex p/ups themselves ... you could just get a probe in. What I
found was that the 4th string pickup itself was wide open.

By pure fluke I knew the name of the synth guy at Roland Canada in Richmond. After a few discouraging email
exchanges I phoned him and explained what I had done - he was reticent to do anything about my problem
because I was not a luthier but decided to send me just the p/u assembly from a gk2 to see if that would work. It
did (once I reversed all the leads) and my G202 has become my main guitar synth.

So - if software and manual manipulation of the pickup don't work for you, it might be worthwhile using a
multimeter to test the 6 pickups themselves.

Good luck - happy hunting - merry new year!

P

Re: Axon NGC-66 upgrade to V.5.23 + more on Axon

Thanks Greg!

You certainly took some time doing some research on my behalf! The info you
accumulated must have taken you a long time, and I appreciate it so much. I will check out
the links provided.

Although the responses provided before were great, they were technically beyond my
abilities. I talked to a couple people more savvy than me, and they said they would know
how to do it in the US, but getting it done in Thailand is another matter.

You supplied me with so much great information, and with the software provided I'm sure
I can get it done somehow. It might take waiting to my next trip to Bangkok (not exactly
close to me) or perhaps Singapore, but I think you've given me all the available tools
necessary to find someone who can get the job done that has, well... uh, all the available
tools necessary who can get the job done (Is there an echo in here?)

Thanks so much to you Greg, and Andras! With your help, and a little help from the Lord I
think I might have a functioning MIDI guitar pretty soon - Next stop Midi Mandolin! (I
wish, but, just kidding)

Thanks,

Jeffrey
