multiple simultaneous program changes

Howdy,
I'm looking for a way to change midi programs on multiple devices in
my live rig simultaneously. I was thinking that there was a MIDI
Router that did this (the JL Cooper MSB Rev 2, maybe?), but none of
the ones I've spent the last few hours looking for, send MIDI program
changes on the fly.

I don't know if the following device exists, but it sure would be
great if it did, and if somebody could tell me about it, since I can't
seem to find it on my own.

I'd like a MIDI router independent of a computer that responds to
program change messages, and when changing programs, begins to send
programmed program changes (or even SysEx would be better, eh!) on the
out streams. Each program would also have recallable routing,
filtering, etc. Does this device exist?

If this device doesn't exist, can I use the sequencer in my K2500RS to
send program change messages on the different MIDI out channels?

Many thanks,

Yeah, the sequencer would be perfect for this sort of thing. You can either
record your MIDI Changes (the easiest way, but sloppy) or simply program in
the program changes from the event editor. You probably want to record the
events first to make sure you know how your other machines will react to the
change. For instance, a program change on the Kurzweil is accomplished
(err...in default mode I believe) by sending 2 program changes...these tell
it first the bank and then the program. Others do it differently and may
even require a CC value to provide the bank (few do it that way anymore
though). Record the key presses you need, and figure out how each synth is
receiving them...and then program them yourself.

Maybe you could try a hardware sequencer.

Something to look out for?

Q: What's the link between Jordan Rudess (uses the K2600 a lot), Mike Garson
and David Bowie?

A: 'Heathen'

I like both Rudess and Garson from the little I've heard of them, the first
from a Dream Theater song and some of the K series demoes, and the second
from the '1. Outside' album which is one of my favourites.

To anyone who has listened to 'Earthling' and 'Hours', could you send me
your appreciation of these albums directly?

Thanks,

Yash.

I don't have the Belkin, but I have the Xircom USB to SCSI convertor.
I was one of the lucky ones to buy their products two months before
Intel bought them and orphaned all of the products. WTF?! But I
digress.

Fundamentally it works fine for small file transfers. But when I try
to copy a whole directory I get BSoDd on Win98SE. I haven't tried it
yet on Win2k, so it could be that the buffer flowthrough is handled
better there.

Based on knowledge of the USB and Firewire protocols, I'd just go with
the Firewire to SCSI even if it is a tad bit more expensive. Firewire

Re: multiple simultaneous program changes

Check out the Digital Instruments MX8. I think it may do the trick.

RE: multiple simultaneous program changes

Oliver

I do not know how this would affect your rig, but I can see a number of ways
of doing this.

---

For upto 8 devices you can use Setups to achieve this, sending patch changes
from each zone, and assigning the zones as MIDI channels. Remember you can
still set a sequencer Song in the Common page, so you are not losing the
sequencer at all. Once Setup per configuration Song would be about right in
this instance.

---

If you want a creative way of doing this using the MIDI sequencer, try this.
For every rig configuration, design a SongStep with one channel devoted to
each device in your rig, and make sure the channel designations are M for
MIDI. Place your Bank/Patch/Volume/Pan information in each channel in the
stream (I would tend NOT to rely on the initial patch/vol/pan using the
Mixer - for a bunch of reasons). Once you have put in MIDI patch changes,
you can edit out Bank msgs as required (each device will be different -
watch for errors of -1). For Sysex you'll need to get the Kurz to record a
Sysex event from another device to get going, cut and paste will then work.
Trim the end event in the list editor to as short a possible - 1 bar may be
about all you need.

You then create a master Song, and call it "RigChange" or something. Make
sure all channels in this Song are L for Local. Tie each SongStep in turn,
to the main song, by specifying it as a step in the Arrange page.

I've always wanted to do this with the Mellotron samples...

Not directly. MWheel "has" to remain "MWheel" in case other programs,
layers, setups, etc. want to use it at the same time.

Yep! Beautiful exposition!

FUNs, FUNs, FUNs. They're your friends.

I don't know if there's enough to do exactly what you want,
but it'll be pretty close. Check into the 'diode' and 'tri'
or 'warp1' FUNs. They'll let you generate control signals
that are different shapes of the input (in this case, MWheel).
