Hi! just got a K5!

Hi guys!

I just got a K5, at last! I was thinking about buying one of those old beasts since a long time; anyway, during
the last 5 years I bought myself a K1m, a K3 and a K4r (well, those and a few other synths)...
now almost half my studio consists of Kawai synthesizers :)

I think some of you are in these groups too!

Hi! just got a K5!

Howdy,

If you run across an extra circuit board for the display and data wheel, (unfortunately, the main board),
I'm interested.

Hi,

Just so I am clear are you asking for the main board as well as the display and data wheel?

I have a K5 I started using for spare parts. If you are interested in those components, you might be interested in purchasing the whole K5. It was in working condition. Those specific parts were working. Let me know. I will let it go for $125 plus shipping. I have other projects to work on.

Overtone

can I run Overtone under windows XP, at least via a DOS emulator?
is there any other software that enable resynthesis?

greetings

track(s) featuring the K5

Here is a track of mine I recorded in 2001, featuring two K5's (panned hard left and right) and a soundfont of
my old TR-606. This piece was made for a documentary on UFO's, "Out Of The Blue" which aired on the SciFi
channel. It's perhaps a little long, and somewhat simple, but it worked for the cue, and shows off the
richness possible with the K5 in multimode.

Each K5 was running a variation of a patch called Alien 1, in multimode with 4 detuned voices, for that
orchestral sound you can only get from the K5.

Most of the other tracks in this set (Ancient Visitors) contain lots of K5, K3, and k5000s:

Re: Overtone

Under Windows you can use the Atari ST emulator Steem to run a K5 editor (in the Files section). There are
(unfortunately) no emulators for the Mac that support MIDI ports at this time.

Leslie Sanford (creator of the awesome Cobalt VST, buy it!) has created a nice app that does resynthesis for
the K5, this is also in the Files section, also there is a set of raw patches he made from the wavetables of the
K3 and Korg DW-8000 you can download, which are really nice starting points for creating K5 patches.

Backlight

my K5 has the well known 'no back-light' syndrome...

could this be solved by adding a bit of soldering to the inverter in the MI-010 board or do I absolutely need to
replace the backlight?!

I've read something about that in this group and <at> kfuenf.org but it's not clear if some simple solderings
would be enough or not...
do I need a new backlight foil? a new inverter? both? none?!

please help!

Re: Backlight

Hi Fabio,

First try to add solder, that sometimes work. Then, if that doesn't work, you could try a new backlight if the inverter still works (audible whine when the synth is turned on). If it doesn't work, then replace the inverter. Often, both the inverter and EL film are dead.

Cheers,
Antoine

Re: Backlight [etc.]

Hi Antoine,

yes, I can hear a high pitched noise coming from the power supply zone, so I guess that the inverter is
working?!?! now I need to ask a friend to do the soldering job, hoping this will cure it...

all in all my K5 needed and still needs some tlc...

...consider that it is opened since day 1: one panel side is broken so I'm gonna have some custom made WOODEN
sides [that would also provide a more vintage look; I'm thinking my K3 would look cooler too with some
wooden sides, so I intend to also scrap those ugly plastic things...]

aftertouch was a big problem too, so I tweaked VR1 and VR2 in MI-004... before doing that, not evern the
hardest pressure could result in any aftertouch action... midi-ox showed that aftertouch had no vital
signs at all! it was virtually disengaged...
now aftertouch works OK... actually, I think K3's aftertouch is better, but velocity-wise there's no
contest: K5's is far better!

greetings
