Oh my.

Mind you, I certainly wasn't meaning to imply that he got the job because
of his connection to Columbus or anything like that -- Columbus's
discovery wasn't known until a little while later, and if Sir Ridley
Scott's film is to be believed, Columbus actually fell into obscurity for
a while, and this is why the western hemisphere was named after the
explorer Amerigo Vespucci instead of Christopher Columbus. (Or maybe the
Americas were named after him because he was the first explorer to find
the mainland, whereas Columbus never got further than the islands?)

On the other hand, 1492 *was* the year in which Ferdinand and Isabella
reclaimed all of Spain for Christendom and expelled the Muslims -- so
maybe a Spanish pope was elected in honour of *that*...?

Pardon the late reply, but upon my father's recommendation, I've been
using AVG Free Edition (sorry, don't know the full name).

You mean they aren't required already?

I know we didn't pre-September 11. But on the first few occasions that I
went south *after* that, I got chastised at the border by American guards
who said I should have brought my passport with me if I was going to go
into another country. So now I always take my passport.

You mean those armed American officers were overstepping the law, bullying
and intimidating a foreigner beyond what the law required, etc.? :)

Re: Prayer request

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers, and responses here. One
of the things I have learned is that it's OK on the part of folks that
the pastor doesn't have all the answers; you feel like you "have to be
Christ for them" at times, and all you are is His disciple (as if one
could say "all you are"). I thought the sermon I gave at the memorial
liturgy was a mess, and was surprised at the number of people who said
that they were touched by what I said, that it was very good, etc., so
I learned (again!) that I shouldn't be the judge of what comes out of
my mouth at the sermon/homily; that God uses me and whatever I say to
work His power in people.
Although I have been feeling guilty about not going up to that
meeting I'm supposed to be at, I have been sleeping a lot, getting out
and seeing people, doing the things that need to be done. The feelings
of depression are lifting as my friends pray for me, as I do a bit more
spiritual reading than I had been, and, especially, thank God that I am
alive and not taking my life for granted.
Life is such a precious gift, and Christ gives each and every one
of us a unique role in His body and in the world. That is why the devil
keeps whispering in some ears that we are useless, worthless,
insignificant. (This is the major problem that I have with
evolutionists and Carl Saganists: they spend so much time trying to
convince people that we are mere animals, descended from "lower"
beings, that our planet is an insignificant speck in the universe, and
some people end up believing it, when what they need is a reason to get
up every morning. As a result, their lives mean nothing because they
have been taught that they are nothing.) To paraphrase CS Lewis in "The
Screwtape Letters," if we weren't a threat to Satan and his plots, he
wouldn't bother with us. It is just so tragic when some people end up
believing the lie rather than the Truth.
God bless + each and every one of us with the remembrance that we

I can't believe that would ever happen... ;-)

I'm not sure what the rules are for Canadians entering the US, but the
changes Karl mentioned earlierm that affect US citizens returning to
the US from foreign countries, are to be phased in starting Dec 31,
2005 and be fully implemented by Dec 31, 2007. The Washington Post has
a decent article explaining the details:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A28188-2005Apr5.html.

Diversity right now, Dammit!

I was reading this story: Microsoft gay workers call for action
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2002258338_microside30m.html

In it, gay and lesbian workers are apparently incensed by Microsoft's
neutral stance concerning Washington State Legislature's HB1515, a workplace
anti discrimination bill.

The ruckus started when Microsoft declined to actively endorse the bill. At
first it was reported in The Stranger that MS had done so in a peer pressure
defeat from a local Evangelical Church run by Ken Hutcherson, a nationally
known opponent of gay rights.

What made it kind of tricky was that two MS employees had testified in
Olympia about the bill:

"....Two gay Microsoft employees, Jean McCarthy, a business development
manager, and Gregory S. McCurdy, a senior attorney, testified in the house
State Government Operations and Accountability committee in favor of the
bill. Asked if they were making their statements as official representatives
of the company, McCurdy informed the committee that they were appearing in a
personal capacity, but added that "the company has taken a position in
support of the bill."

They apparently overstepped their understanding slightly.

Microsoft's gay and lesbian employee group (GLEAM) is now demanding
Microsoft support the anti-discrimination legislation. GLEAM called on
Ballmer to act before the next year's legislative session, and laid out a
series of steps for the company "to achieve the goals that you have outlined
in the past".
