Okay, so I read it again and this time I see where you say MY WEDDING, duh!

But that would be pretty cool to invite people to an X's wedding, eh? ;-)

Spider-man 2 was so cheesy...

it was almost unbearable.

I wish I could think some jokes about how bad it was, but I want to get
to bed.

how's this:
The cheese was so thick you'd need a saw to cut it.

I think that Sam Rami must be constipated as he obviously can't cut the
cheese! (oh, I actually like that one, I think I'll use it tomorrow)

Happy Canada Day! :)

It's my wedding (see first sentence of previous paragraph). Really. Getting
married to a girl from Baltimore named Kelly Burns. As odd as that may
sound, it's true. The church is fairly big... and my family lives mostly in
southern Ontario and is largely not making the trip, so it looks like there
will be maybe 50-55 people sitting on my side at the moment, I'd just like
a few more to fill out the crowd. I know this was an odd venue to post on,
but as crazy as this sounds, I get the sense that not having met most of
you, yet I know you better than I know a lot of other people. Note that I
didn't post to the DADL, just the OT list. But thanks for checking, Mark.

Wow. You certainly seem to be in the minority on this one. What,
specifically, was cheesy about it?

(I'm hoping to cut away from work tomorrow afternoon to catch it.)

Orthodox Christians face modern mores

Orthodox Christians face modern mores
By GARY STERN
THE JOURNAL NEWS
(Original publication: June 23, 2004)

The age-old notion of Christian marriage between man and woman is under siege by
loosening sexual mores, commonplace divorce and the reality that homosexual
relationships will soon be commonly recognized, several Orthodox Christian
scholars agreed yesterday.

Speaking at St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary, these scholars
wrestled with how to reconcile traditional church teachings with a culture that
they say is often well-meaning, but losing touch with basic Christian beliefs.

On the controversial question of same-sex relationships, for instance, the
speakers agreed that Orthodox tradition requires gays and lesbians to live
chaste, sexless lives. But they hardly seemed satisfied with such a conclusion,
in light of the growing consensus that homosexual orientation is not a choice
for at least a large minority of gays and lesbians.

Peter Bouteneff, an assistant professor in dogmatic theology at St. Vladimir's,
considered the options facing a gay Christian, such as denial, lying, leaving
the church or chastity. "I'm not sure I could bear that cross," he said.

About 60 Orthodox priests and lay leaders from across the country participated
in yesterday's talks as part of a weeklong institute on "Does Christian
Marriage Have a Future?" Speakers are looking at the meaning and importance of
Christian marriage, as well as the myriad challenges to it: divorce,

The Moscow Times
Brother's Keeper

Fresh from his wins at a Russian Orthodox film festival, Serbian director
Ninoslav Randjelovic talks with Alexander Osipovich about his one-man crusade
against ethnic violence in Kosovo.

By Alexander Osipovich

The camera zooms in on a dark-haired little girl. As she smiles and fidgets,
behaving like a typical fourth-grader, it is hard to believe that she is
growing up in the midst of ethnic conflict. In fact, her village in Kosovo has
been hit by a recent wave of kidnappings, killings and arsons, perpetrated by
Albanian extremists. After school, she goes to play in the only place she feels
safe -- the yard of the local Serbian Orthodox church.

"What do you want to do for your summer vacation?" asks a voice behind the
camera.

"I want to go to Serbia to walk a little," she replies.

This exchange occurs in a documentary titled "The School of Our Discontent,"

Um, you don't.

Christianity should certainly /engage/ the surrounding culture, but
reconcile it's teachings? I don't think so. In the world, not of it.

Governor Vetoes Home School Bill

Don't remember if I posted this one last month, so here goes, just in case.

Governor Vetoes Home School Bill
Allen Browning

May 28, 2004 -- A bill passed by the General Assembly that would have allowed
parents without college degrees to educate their children was not signed into
law by Gov. Mark Warner on May 21.
Called the “Home School Freedom Bill” by its proponents, House Bill 675 was
initially proposed by Del. Robert B. Bell (R-58) of Charlottesville and passed
on a 60-40 vote. Locally, Delegates Richard Black (R-32), Robert Marshall
(R-13), Joe T. May (R-33) and Thomas D. Rust (R-86) were among the supporters
while Del. Gary Reese (R-67) was the only dissenter. Both state senators,
William C. Mims (R-33) and Sen. H. Russell Potts Jr. (R-27), also supported the
bill.

Virginia is one of only two states that prohibits parents without college
degrees from educating their children at home. The other state is North Dakota,
according to Mike Smith, president of the nationally recognized,
Purcellville-based Home School Legal Defense League Association (HSLDA), which
shares a space with Patrick Henry College.

“What we were trying to do was bring Virginia up to speed with the rest of the
states,” said Smith. “We’re disappointed. We really would have liked to see
