Qpopper Monthly Help File

         M O N T H L Y Q P O P P E R L I S T H E L P

This is a routine monthly reminder of how to unsubscribe or use other
list commands.

First off, when you subscribe to a mailing list, you almost always get
a first message from the list admin telling you about the mailing list,
and explaining how to unsubscribe. It is always a good idea to keep
these messages, since you never know when you will need to unsubscribe.
This is particularly useful when you change email addresses, because it
is difficult to unsubscribe from a list after you have a different
mailing address.

Every message sent by the list includes headers that you can just click
on to subscribe, unsubscribe, get help, or see the archives (if the
list has archives).

If you have tried this method, and the mailing list software won't let
you unsubscribe, it is probably because your address has changed. In
this case, please send a message to
<mailto:listmaster <at> lists.pensive.org> stating which list (or lists)
you want to unsubscribe from, and what you think your previous address
was. There is a human (me) who will then try to take care of your
request, often within a few days.

The list server in use (called AutoShare), offers several options which
you can set for yourself. These options affect how the list sends you
messages.

The available options are:

Hi. I have poppassd installed. It used to work fine,

Proble with qpopper and virtual IP addresses

I am having a problem running qpopper on a virtual host name.

1. Running qpopper 4.0.5

2. Running Solaris 5.9 on a Sun Netra

3. Have set up the following in the ifconfig.

 le0 hostname.xxx.yyy.edu
 le0:1 mailhost.xxx.yyy.edu
 le0:2 pophost.xxx.yyy.edu

Problem:

I can "telnet pophost.xxx.yyy.edu 110" and connect to the pophost and go
through the test pop login. This connects and shows messages with the list
command.

If I use pophost.xxx.yyy.edu as the incoming server name in a mail reader,
such as exchange, it will not make a connection. I do not even see any debug
info in the log files. If I use hostname.xxx.yyy.edu in the mail reader it
will work just fine.

I can ping, telnet into, and nslookup on the virutal IP address so I
believe they are set up correctly working correctly

What would cause the virutal IP address not to work and the real IP to work
in a mail reader. It seems like it is getting confuse in the sending and
receiving of packets when it goes to the virtual IP address.

exchange is a mail server, not a mail reader.
outlook is a mail reader.

the same ip/host that's configured in your mail reader?

you can telnet into the ip/host on port 110 from the SAME machine that
the mail reader is on?

Not entirely true. Exchange can "pull" mail from a POP3 server not unlike
fetchmail.

Not only that, it's the preferred method for incompetent "expert
consultants" setting up dialup boxes, as they seem to think that ETRN is
too hard.

I'll leave to your imaginations the horrors of what happens when
messages come into the POP box with multiple recipients in the Bcc lines
and no To: entry matching the domain of the Exchange server, after the
messages get to the Exchange box.

Is that MTA based or a script?

Perl also has mailbox managing tools.
You might just roll your own.

yeah, but wouldn't that make it a puller or fetcher then? :-)

NEWQUESTION - Problem with qpopper and virtual IP addresses

Below is the original message about having problems with virtual IP
addresses

Anthony J. Biacco (thelittleprince) responded asking if I could telnet from
the same machine that I was having outlook problems and I responded with

You did hit on something that I did not think about. When I telnet
to the pophost I am doing it from another UNIX hosts, yet the Outlook
problem is on a WinXP laptop that I use for my desktop. So I started a cmd
window and tried to telnet from my Window workstation to pophost and it does
not work. My mind was tunneled in thinking it was the pophost side and not
the exchange side. As a matter of fact I fixed a persons Netscape mail,
which runs on a UNIX system, and he was able to read his email using
pophost.

When I "telnet pophost.xxx.yyy.edu 110" from my PC WinXP laptop
which has a static IP address, it just hangs just like it does in Outlook.

I can "ping pophost" from my PC WinXP laptop and it works just fine.
I can also do nslookup on names and I get back the correct info.

SO HUMMMM. Any ideas what would cause this.

Thanks againg for your help. That is why I like groups. Sometime you
get stuck looking at the problem one way and others see it another way.

SOOOO now the question is what would keep my PC WinXP laptop from not being
able to telnet into pophost.xxx.yyy.edu

sounds like a firewall blocking it, to me. Either on the laptop or on the
through-gateway. router access-lists, xp ip security filters, norton,
blackice defender, etc..
Might as well, also, try telnetting to the virtual ip (not the hostname)
on 110. (yeah, i know the ping and nslookup worked for the hostname, but
ya never know, and i never trust a forward DNS resolution for debugging).
