Ideas for future mh-e releases

I'd like to take this opportunity to remind folks to submit their
patches, stuff for contrib, ideas, and bug reports into the Bugs and
Feature Requests sections at SourceForge so we can think about what
to prioritize for the next release.

One thought I had for future releases is to focus on one topic per
release. A few topics I can think of include:

    o outstanding bug fixes
    o nmh conversions
    o customize updates
    o menu/toolbar updates
o image updates (modeline mh-e logo, inline image/jpg body parts)
    o other MIME updates

These are in the order that I think we should attack them. Thoughts?

A logo

Folks,

  We need a logo.

First I look at http://mh-e.sourceforge.net/, and then I look at
something like http://mailcrypt.sourceforge.net/. Then I weep. Then,
for comfort, I go to http://nmh.sourceforge.net/.
http://tcl.sourceforge.net/ is clean. If you find any other
SourceForge home pages that you like, please send me the URL.

Anyway, if you've got a little flair for artistry, please see what
you can come up with. We need a nice logo for the Web page, plus a
tiny 16x16 (I think) icon for the modeline (if you run gnus in Emacs
21, or Xemacs, you'll know what I'm talking about).

For example, here is the 18x12 image for the gnus modeline:

Here is the Emacs splash screen:

Here is the octopus on the MH book's cover:

I was thinking something along the lines of the octopus riding the

Re: indexing mh-e doc: complete info hard to find

Stephen suggested many moons ago that the "Using" and "Customizing"
sections of the manual should be merged. Per our charter, I
submitted this item as a "Discussion" item in the Feature Requests
section. Please add your two bits, either positive or negative to:

https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=405605&group_id=13357&atid=363357

  Thanks.

font-lock additions

One of our tenets is that we keep mh-e lean and mean. However, I do
think that adding font-lock keywords to the codebase is something
that really should be done. People expect something to happen if you
  set global-font-lock-mode.

  Please go to:

    https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=405606&group_id=13357&atid=363357

and toss in your 2 cents.

  Great, thanks!

It appears that Richard and some others have already done this. I've
included the GNU CVS log for mh-util.el below. Note version 1.20 in
particular. The mh-e sources on SourceForge are up to date. Indeed,
you folks should be using this stuff to ensure that their changes
are compatible with the various Emacsen.

Thus, our next release, 5.1, will contain the following:

    Release 5.0.2
    Bug fixes from FSF
    Bug fixes from us

RCS file: /cvs/emacs/lisp/mail/mh-utils.el,v
Working file: mh-utils.el
head: 1.24
branch:
locks: strict
access list:
keyword substitution: kv
total revisions: 24;	selected revisions: 24

I've noticed that in the latest snapshot of Gnus, they're using something
called "mml" for their MIME decoding and display. I haven't taken a
close look at it, so I don't know its details, but it seems from a quick
glance that it is lighter than the semi/flim/emh combination that I
currently use with mh-e to view MIME messages.

Anyone know anything more about mml, and whether it might be integrated
somehow with, or used by, mh-e?

No, but at some point I was going to look. I was particularly
impressed when I saw an inline JPG! It would be good to share as
much code as possible. If anyone digs in, please report. I'm looking
forward to the day that I don't have to say M-! mhshow RET.
