Initial Comment:
Many mailers still send attachments as
application/octet-stream. Ideally, we'd sniff the magic
at the beginning of the file and convert the
Content-Type accordingly, so that the user wouldn't
have to use mh-display-with-external-viewer in the
first place. But that might be beyond the scope of this
feature request.

This feature request concerns
mh-display-with-external-viewer: if that function
doesn't turn up any completions (as is the case with
application/octet-stream), MH-E should try to sniff the

XEmacs maintainer for MH-E

Hi folks, I just signed up to be the XEmacs maintainer for the gnus and
MH-E packages.

Bill, Stephen Turnbull pointed out that many months ago there was some
talk of your becoming the XEmacs maintainer for MH-E.  I'm assuming that
if you really wanted to do that, you would have done it already.  If I'm
wrong, please speak up.

Also, I'd like to get some sort of shared understanding of how involved
I'll be with MH-E development.  The role that I currently envision for
myself is

- update the XEmacs package with new releases and (time allowing)
  critical bug fixes
- alpha and beta testing of MH-E releases on XEmacs
- answer XEmacs-specific questions for you all (I'm not an expert, and
  in fact Bill can probably do a better job of this than I can.  But I
  can poke around in the online documentation.  If someone sends me a
  code snippet I can report back on what it does under XEmacs.  And I do
  try to keep current with the xemacs-beta list)
- subscribe to mh-e-devel, but not pay much attention to it unless
  something specific to XEmacs comes up
- initial review of MH-E questions that come to xemacs-beta

Does that sound reasonable?

It would have been nice to ping me first, but I'm tickled pink
nonetheless.

;-). It was more that I really needed to do it rather than wanted to do
it, so it didn't really percolate too high in my queue, especially with
the 8.0 release in the works. But I'm delighted that you stood up to do
this for the XEmacs community. And I trust that Stephen welcomes your
contribution as well.

Yeah, sorry about that.  I'd forgotten that you might be interested
until Stephen reminded me, which was after I'd volunteered.

Ah, well, I'm not sure I'll have much time for that.  I'm a little
nervous just dealing with the fairly mundane maintainer work.

I appreciate the vote of confidence, but we may need to discuss this
further.  In particular, I'll need to discuss the issue of copyright
assignment with my manager at Sun.  (I don't think there will be a
problem, particularly if I do the work on my own time, but I want it all
to be squeaky clean.)

Is copyright assignment really needed if all I touch are XEmacs-related
files on SourceForge?

OK, I'd suggest starting that now since it might take a while.

Strictly speaking, no, but XEmacs work involves hitting files in
emacs/lisp/mh-e too. The good news is I did a pretty good job fixing
hundreds of XEmacs compilation problems during the reorganization so
there isn't anything left to do at this moment in time (that I know of).

Since most XEmacs work in emacs/lisp/mh-e would be a line here or there,
you could submit patches using the SourceForge patch manager for one of
us to apply which we can do legally until you get over, say, 15 lines
total.

So, it would be good to go ahead and start the copyright stuff now. It
won't hurt if you don't need it, and will be essential if you do.

e command


Then again when I used the e command I didn't even look at the header and just sent the mail after editting it.  I
assumed the from head is automaticaly placed in there jsut as in the 'm' compose mail situation.

But, then again what if you wanted to change it for some reason, say to have the resonse sent to your home
address over the weekend, etc?

Just thinking. of possiblities.

I talked to my manager this morning about this.  She doesn't think it'll
be a problem, either, but she'd like to get a copy of the assignment
form.  

I found
http://www.gnu.org/prep/maintain/html_node/Copyright-Papers.html, but
it's not clear to me how to get a copy of the form.  (I assume I want
the "future" form.)  The web page gives a couple filesystem paths for
directories that contain the assignment form(s), but I don't understand
what those paths are relative to.

For example, the phrase

    they are also available from the doc/Copyright/ directory of the
    gnulib project at http://savannah.gnu.org/projects/gnulib.

implies to me that there is a projects/gnulib/doc/Copyright/.  But if I
try to go there, I get an error "Invalid group: that group does not
exist".  

So, could someone either send me a full URL, so that I can download the
