Password reminders

Got this back from one of my list users. It seems like it could
do with attention:

SPAM and moderated lists

We have several moderated lists. Subscription is set to "confirm". How do
I cause non-subscribers to be rejected instead of going to the "pending
administrative requests" queue?

resetting list owner's admin password

Sorry if this question has been asked before, but I'm trying to leave
early for Labor Day and don't have time to sift through the
archives. I hope someone can answer it.

I'm running Mailman v 1.0 and python v 1.5.2
One of my list owners has forgotten his admin password. I've
tried resetting it by logging in with the site password but
it didn't seem to take. Is there a way to reset an owner
password or to get mailman to mail it to the owner?

newbie: Mailman sends a digest over and over again...

Dear gurus,

I'm running Mailman 1.0rc3 on a RedHat 5.2 box. I have a problem...

A couple of days ago I started up a new list. For some strange reason one of my digest subscribers keeps
getting digest #1 over and over again once every hour. I have tried to unsub him, but the mail keeps going
out. The logfiles for Mailman looks just fine. Everything else works perfect, but how do I stop this mail
from going out??

I'm not a unix guru, so please give some advice here...I did delete the digest in /var/spool/mqueue/,
restarted sendmail, cron etc...I also did a complete reboot.

 TIA,

 /David

Introduction

Hi, I just joined the Mailman-user email list so I thought I'd drop a line
and introduce myself. I'm Gary Bowen, aka Listwrangler, and I'm a volunteer
with a small non-profit organization that delivers a lot of information and
support via web pages and email lists. Our old ISP was in the process of
porting us from Majordomo 1.9.3 to Mailman 1.0 when they sold their assets
to a new ISP, who has implemented the lists. But, there are bugs...

We're having problems with subscribes and unsubscribes, specifically,
users' passwords don't work when they try to unsubscribe via the web
interface. And when users do get acknowledgements saying the succesfully
unsubscribed, they aren't. Also, the email interface doesn't work so that
when they try to email in their /unsubscription that doesn't work either.

I'd like to work on the web interface problems first. When I go to the info
page, enter their address, enter the admin password, and it says, "You have
been unsubscribed." But the user still gets email. I then went into the
'View Subscriber List' and found the unsubscribed email address on the
subscriber list, and deleted it from there, and got a "You have been
unsubscribed" message. I hope they really are unsubscribed.

My ISP has informed me that they've done all they intend to do, and that
it's now up to me to do the maintenance on the list. Personally, I wonder
how I'm supposed to do that when I don't have access to the machine running
the list... but that's a separate issue.

Anyhow, I'm digging into the archives, but I'd greatly appreciate it if
folks could point me to reference books or URLS regarding Mailman. Since
the switch is recent, I haven't bought any books and am wondering which
ones are good.

How Do I Volunteer for a To Do list item?

I've been prowling around the site and couldn't help notice that one of my
pet peeves is on the to-do list -- documentation! I'm a former professional
author and editor who's currently in the process of switching careers to
become an information technology specialist, so I'd be interested in
helping to write the user, list owner, and site owner files.

Whom should I contact in order to find out the status of these files?

One suggestion, Mailman should develop a set of moderator features (with
documentation), so that routine list services can be handed off to their
moderators, who have a moderator password that lets them do certain things
but not others. This would enable the list administrator to NOT receive
those pesky un/subscribe and other routine notices that the moderator
handles.

I've had ten years experience as a member of email lists, and have spent
about five years administering Majordomo lists, and have recently been
moved over to Mailman. I've come around to where I slightly prefer Mailman
over Majordomo, but there are some Majordomo features that I miss. And
lately, with all the broken Mailman software, my affection for Mailman is
somewhat strained. Through all of this I've been wishing for a help file.
So, on the principle that if you want something done, you have to do it
yourself, I'm volunteering.

Let me know if I can be of service.

Thanks

Gary Bowen

Trouble with held messages

Hi,

my lists have been running fine for a while, but now I have a problem.
I can not get rid of held messages. When I try I get this traceback:

Traceback (innermost last):
  File "/var/lib/mailman/scripts/driver", line 112, in run_main
    main()

File "/usr/lib/mailman/Mailman/MailList.py", line 796, in LogMsg
    logf.write(msg % args + '\n')
TypeError: not enough arguments for format string

Is there a way to get rid of the held messages and hope the list will
work normally, or what else can I do?

TIA
