current state

Hi Vadim,

how would you describe the current state of Mahogany?
This time nobody work on it, right?

I looked over it for 10 minutes and tried some things. It looks quite
nice and I like it because it use wxWidgets. So it is easy for me to
work with the code.

The gui feels quite unergonomic. I tried to set up a
nntp-server-account. In the preferences of the nntp-folder there are
three(!) places where I can setup login informations (user-login,
server, password) for the nntp-server.

Before I work more intensive with Mahogany I want to ask some simple things:

1. Is is possible to setup more than one NNTP-Account (for example three
servers)?

2. Is it possible to setup more than one Mail-Account (pop3+smtp, imap)?

I am quite busy the next month, but I am looking forwarde to work on
Mahogany code because I need a Mail-/News-Client. What do you think
about it? :)

Yes. See below.

Yes. Please look in the Manual->FAQ->Can I have multiple POP3 or IMAP accounts?

 Hello,

Unfortunately this is mostly true. As I use it as my email client I do
work on it but mostly just to keep it working with the latest wx versions
(sometimes adding code to take advantage of the new features in wx) and to
fix the bugs which affect me personally as well adding the features which I
myself need. But no big new features have been added since quite some time.

First, I don't really advise using Mahogany as a news reader. It can be
used for this but it's really not convenient compared with a real news
reader. I use it for mail and very occasional news posting and continue to
use slrn for reading USENET.

Hmm, I'm not sure I understand this. "User name" and "password" are
usually not used with NNTP servers but if they're you can only enter them
here, where else? And the "server" field is mandatory, of course. I must be
missing something but I don't see anything especially unergonomic about
this.

What is the difference between M and other nntp-clients? Just the gui or
problems with coding?

btw: Where can I set the language to english? I found nothing like this
in the global settings.

Ok, I start M and open the nntp-server preferences.
The first section is Access ("Zugriff").
The is a username ("Benutzername"), password, server and newsgroup.
I would think that this are the login infos for the nntp-server.
But I do not understand what the field "newsgroup" has to do on this
place? Can I just subscribe to one newsgroup? Of course not, I think!?

The second section is Identity ("Identität"). This sections is quite
logic. But there is a username ("Benutzername") field. What is this?
What happens if I fill there and in the first-section-username-field
different strings?

The UI mainly, I think. It misses many things essential for a news reader.

The language is determined by the current locale but can be overridden
from the command line using the --lang option (see "./M --help").

 Yes.

You can. Each folder in M folder tree corresponds to one newsgroup, e.g.
try entering comp.soft-sys.wxwindows here.

No I understand some things there. Thanks a lot!
And I am very suprised about that you mostly agree with my arguments. In
knew the other way if we discuss something in the wx-groups. ;)

There is a lot of work to make Mahogany usefull for silly users like me!
In german we say "DAU" (silliest assumed user) to this. Is there a
english word for this?

In this state I am not able to use Mahogany productiv. But M is on the
top of my TODO list (excluded my own backup project "blackfisk"). And I
like how do you do thinks, Vadim (I see with wxWidgets).

I will contact you again if I finished my exame (I am gona be a nurse!)
and my "blackfisk". I think it will be before christmas! ;)

best wishes
Christian

It's difficult to disagree that Mahogany UI needs improvement.

CB> There is a lot of work to make Mahogany usefull for silly users like me!

To be fair, Mahogany was never meant to be "for dummies". Our goal was
from the beginning to write an advanced IMAP mail client which would
satisfy the most demanding users (such as Karsten and me :-). Of course,
it's not an excuse to have a confusing UI but it partly stems from the
overall hierarchical organization of the options which was part of the
original design.

CB> In german we say "DAU" (silliest assumed user) to this. Is there a

The only expression I can think of is "to be fool-proof".

I like that you carefully avoid saying of which year :-) Anyhow, good luck
with your project and you're always welcome to try making Mahogany better.

VZ

problems to get the source from svn

I use TortoiseSVN as a svn-client on WinXPSP2.
I used the url described on sourceforge
<https://mahogany.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/mahogany>

I canceled the checkout because there are to much files.
There is a trunk-folder and a lot of branches folders.
But I do not branches.

I just need the current version of mahogany to work with the code. How
should I setup my svn-client to get the current relevant sources?

Would you add a Code::Blocks project file to SVN if I create one?

 Use https://mahogany.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/mahogany/trunk/M to check
out just the trunk. The organization of the svn repository using branches,
tags and trunk directories is a standard one, see the subversion book for
details.
