extra filtering -- modifying a "subj"

Hi, dear All ;)

Is there any way to automatically "edit" (change) a subj of received
msgs while filtering them? I mean to cut out some standard part at
least.

I got a bunch of messages with forum reply notifications with very
long subj-es like
  "[forum]-[forum_area]-[tread_name]: notify"
with reply contents included and wanna make something like "my own
KB" - i.e. to filter this msgs into folders named "forum area" AND to
cut out some subj parts except "tread name" - i.e. leave a subj
with "tread name" only for easy reading:
  "[forum]-[forum_area]-[tread_name]: notify" => "tread name"

So is there any way to do it?

Also is there any way to do it with body (to cut out 1-st N lines for
example)?

From the Becky's Help:

-----------
%h{header}	The data portion of the specified header line --
%h{X-mailer}, for example.
If you input a certain string enclosed with "" inside {}, it will be
displayed only when the specified header contains data.
e.g. %h{"CC:"Cc} --> CC: mail <at> address (only when Cc field is not empty).

Becky File storage

Reading the online Help I found something of interest. Under Tools | General Setup | Advanced, setting the
size of emails to '0' and unchecking the Save attachments as external will make each email as a separate
file with the attachments embedded within. Now this is very similar to Unix maildir (or Windows
.msg/.eml). So I figured I would set this and then proceeded to reconstruct the local file stores.

For each local mail folder, I did this:

 File | Folder | Reorganize
File | Folder | Combine Attachments

Repeated until all the folders had been processed. Checked the files with a nice text editor (vedit or
boxer), and found that yes it worked like I thought it would. File ext was .bmf (Beck Mail File?) but the
format was plaintext .msg/.eml format.

Now the fun part both, ran a few scripts I had in perl/python to process unix maildir files and they worked!
Now you may wonder what this is getting at? Well now Mailbag Assistant, and Aid4Mail can process the files.
This in turn will allow for longterm searchable archives, with the added benefit which comes from each
email as a file - no worries about any corruption of a mailstore. Yes at the 64 to 640k filesize of the
mailstore (from the low memory days?) may not be big, but try to reconstruct the whole mail folder if there
is say 800 mb of email/attachments in that folder.

Due to the 1 email equals 1 file, there is a bit of waste on the harddrive due to fileslack. Total size of the
data directory for Becky! is 1.8 gig with 115mb of waste. This is a NTFS formatted drive, would not use this
file storage on Fat32. With hard drive sizes where they are, should not be a problem for most people.

Now I have all the folders -- 114 -- with a total of 76,000 plus emails stored as separate files across them.
Becky! is a bit slower on startup, but runs like a champ. Surprised once again by Becky!

Jody most likely already knows about this, but incase this may prove useful to someone.

I've kept a lot of the emails I've received since I first started using
Becky back in 2001. As my folders grew Becky really began to slow down.

On a lark I decided to make nested folders under each primary one and
named them for the year the messages came in. I was surprised to find
that this trick really helped with both Becky's start-up speed as well
as her ability to switch between large folders.

I'm curious as to if you have all of your emails stored in single
folders, too. If not, I wonder if further nesting will help with your
slower startup?

Aye, I should have mentioned this a long while ago as I use the same
technique for the few local folders I keep. I've been almost an
exclusive IMAP user since I started running my own mail server at home
over six years ago so most all of my email messages are server-side as
single file messages anyway.

As I've mentioned in the past, anybody wanting an IMAP (or POP3) account
on my server has but to ask.

I have approx 114 folders, these folders are under 7 main subfolders from the Root (Inbox). Only folders
from the Root are for the subs, all other folders below. Just like I keep my hard drive... nothing in Root ;-)

Emails go back to Feb 1999. Folders have anywhere from 4 to 16000 emails located within. Only down to three
levels max thus far, may reconsider later.

Re: Becky File storage

Jeff, I have about 3 GB of e-mails in Becky, in four mailboxes (two very small,
and one 2.4 GB), in a slew of folders (not subfolders of teh Inbox), and Becky
is hopping along as happily as the first day I used her.

Regards,

Hans L
