Bit late a reply but I would suggest perhaps  considering not updating
your firmware if your PS3 linux is absolutely indispensable. I think
for now that burns the least number of bridges BUT of course could
make playing online / new games unlikely.

I have not used the hacked patch but I am concerned about using it
online with a false sense of security of Sony not being able to detect
it.

To be honest, Sony's actions have left me such a bitter taste in my
mouth that I hardly ever boot up my PS3 anymore - not even for games .
I have not updated my firmware but it looks like I'm going to mothball
my PS3 the way it is for now. Who knows, it might fetch some value
unpatched in the future.

If you must play online or get new games, perhaps buying a new PS3 may
be better. Or upgrading the firmware and just abandoning your ps3
linux.

Myself, I'm showing Sony the finger by not buying anymore PS3 stuff
(or Sony stuff for that matter if I can avoid it, but that in itself
is tricky given how much they actually own).
