Tease! :-)

So, when do we get 1.1.1 for Mac OS X? We're dying out here, man. :-)

(Thanks for all your work, BTW. I love you OOo guys!)

It's a pain, but do:

su -c "/sbin/service network restart"

You can guess what the BLUE PILL is.
So, take a dose of freedom and you might just get to see Zion.

tryed new kernels

Hi everybody

Over this weekend I went to the kernel ppc website and downloaded the
bitkeeper 2.4 stable kernel, also kernel 2.6 for yellowdog.
I did not download the source code.

I installed both them and they both booted fine, and everything works
except my network card won't.

anybody have any ideas?

Thanks
Jim

Re: Off-Topic: OOo 1.1.1 for Mac OS X

Hi,

> So, when do we get 1.1.1 for Mac OS X? We're dying out here, man. :-)

OOo 1.1.1 release candidate for x86 Linux has been built and if
there are no show-stoppers it will become OOo 1.1.1.

Shortly after that I will make builds available for PPC Linux and
for MacOSX Panther (Jaguar users will have to make their own build or
find someone to build it for them).

Right now the MacOSX OOo 1.1.1 for X11 should build out of the
box on Panther using Apple's X11.

The bad news is that Java support still is an issue for MacOSX, and
there will only be the standard Unix installer (same as used by PPC
Linux)
and not some special installer just for MacOSX users
(as was used for OOo 1.0.3 gold master.for MacOSX).

So hopefully, if you can live with those shortcomings, it should come
soon.

Kevin

how to bring up non-X console windows?

Hey there,

Just got YDL installed on my old PowerMac 6100 and it seems to be
running, besides for what seems like a display calibration issue. I
see everything in "triples" (or more) and there are a bunch of
horizontal lines running across the screen.

I suppose I need to bring up a console window so I can fool around to
begin to diagnose it. Problem is, its an old keyboard, and I don't
know what the key combo is to bring up a console window. I have apple,
option, shift, and control buttons if that helps. Anyone know the
correct key combo?

And- can anyone help me out in configuring the display settings so that
my 12'' monitor will work correctly?

thanks a bunch,

Andrew P.

XFce

I've been reading about a lightweight desktop environment called XFce
(http://xfce.org).
Has anybody here tried building it for YDL? Does anybody have any
experience with it?
According to the web site it's supposed to be lightweight and fast
which would be handy
on a slow box.

Greg

I do not know the answer to your first question, but I can help you with
this. To go to a new console, choose control-option-Fn, where "Fn" is
one of the function keys from F1 to F6 (F7 brings you back to your KDE
or Gnome window).

Good luck!

Best wishes,
Clint

I have not played with XFce. However, I have had a reasonable amount of
experience with BlackBox, another "lightweight" window manager. I am
pretty happy with BlackBox (which may already be installed on your
Yellow Dog Linux box). There are a few oddities -- and no documentation,
neither in the environment nor on the Web -- but it is quite likable.

If you decide to experiment with BlackBox, here are a few hints:

[1] right-click to start any and all applications, middle-click to
manage windows

[2] if you "iconize" an application, in fact you hide the application
entirely, and can only visualize it using the middle-click window
manager ("icon" was a very poor choice of name for this hiding feature)

[3] several of the options in the applications (right-click) menu are
not active

[4] there is a text file (I don't recall its location, as I am not at my
YDL box right now -- type "whereis blackbox," go to that directory, and
look for a file called "menu"; the file is *not* in your home directory)
that will allow you to edit the applications menu

Re: XFce

I made a sort of hack of blackbox, if anyone cares, called elf:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/envire-elf/
As for XFCE, I have succesfully build the tarballs and the cvs on ydl
3.0.

Do you mean the key combination when you're running X windows? That is, do
you just want an xterm to pop up? Or do you want to switch to the virtual
consoles? Using Clint's advice above, you'll get the virtual consoles.
