[WBEL-users] List dead?

It's been a long time since I got an email from the list; this is a
check to see if it's gone.

No one need reply; If I get the email from the list I'll know it's still
working.

[WBEL-users] Other linux/library options??

	Is this list alive??

It doesn't look it, at least on Gmane, and I'm very sorry to see
that.

Some guy on the Fedora list I follow*, named Rohit Gupta,
at Kalyani Government Engineering College (KGEC), somewhere in
India, is trying to get a Linux Users' Group (LUG) off the ground
-- and vaunts : "one more success: We have installed and setup
the library computer with fedora 10."

I doubt he guesses what a jackpot he has hit.

I started to refer him to Whitebox; discovered that it
seems to have done a classic imitation of Lost River (id est,
sunk into the ground); started to refer him to Autocat;
discovered searching the archives is a lot less obvious that I
thought -- so I decided to do a first search myself, and zap him
the result -- and couldn't do it, in fact. Aaarrgghhh, it's awful
to get old.

But I'm sure several of you (if any are left) still also follow
Autocat; and some no doubt will have better ideas than that.

Has there been any recent discussion of linux in
libraries, somewhere that a non-librarian could find? Where would
be a good place for him to get a start, to save reinventing
wheels within wheels?

*I think what I monitor (some of) is actually a list at
redhat.com; but I point my newsreader at news.gmane.org, and read
it as gmane.linux.redhat.fedora.general; the thread, titled "Want
to start a LUG with all fedora support," begins on March 12 --
just in case any of you want to jump in.

NB: In case anyone is unfamiliar with Gmane (Could any librarian
not be??), you can simply tell your newsreader to post a
followup; Gmane will send you an autoreply; you reply to that, or
go to a web page, to prove you exist (i.e., you're no spammer);
and Gmane then posts for you.

You want to help? Help. All will welcome it.
You don't like it? Leave. But noone that helps
needs to know that you were here, seriously.
The original idea was a guy built it for his own
use and offered his product up for anyone who
wanted to ride along.
Don't put anything more than that into the
concept, because that's just about all it is.

Re: [WBEL-users] WBEL-5 ???

Hello Alon!

Thank you for the advice, I do appreciate it. I have 3 machines here
with which I use CentOS (1 with 4.7 and 2 with 5.2), all of which are
servers. I also have one using WBEL 4, one using Startcom 5.2, and 2
using Scientific Linux 5.0.2 and 5.0.3. Once upon a time had a few
using Tao Linux and X/OS Linux, and even toyed briefly with Lineox; all
of the last were converted to CentOS. While I like CentOS very much, I
have also liked the fact that it is is not the only RHEL-clone in town.
I do not relish the thought of any of the others going the way of Tao,
X/OS, and Lineox, thus, would like to support WBEL and the other efforts
in ways that I can, starting with using them. For obvious reasons, my
WBEL box does not have direct access to the outside world, but
nonetheless, has done, until recently, all the code developmental work I
have needed it to do. I am noticing that software development is moving
at a slightly quicker pace than has been the case for me in the past,
and so, am having to convert to newer versions of RHEL-clones quicker
than before. While I should like to continue working with WBEL, being
limited long term to WBEL-4 will mean having to migrate to CentOS,
Startcom or SL. This will be sad because I truly like the variety of
RHEL-clones, and it would mean for me that one more has gone by the
wayside. It is this that precipitated my original question. Thanks
again, Alon!

Cheers,
Carl

WBEL was started as a project of a library in Louisiana, ref
http://library.beau.org/ . The original developers had to back off due
to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Their priority first was to keep
evacuees connected. As I understand it, they are still overworked with
the recovery. Yes, WBEL was neglected as a result, but they had higher
priorities.

Vic has apparently taken over the project - and afaik works on his own.

And the work behind creating a rebuild is harder than you might think,
as the build libraries are tricky, to put it mildly.

Thanks,
Mike

[WBEL-users] WBEL-5 ???

Hello WBEL Users,

I was giving serious thought to updating my WBEL-4 box to an EL-5 box,
and was wondering if there was going to be some ISOs created for a
WBEL-5. I like the WBEL ( have been using the different versions since
its inception), and would like to continue. Please let me know if
there is and impending release of a WBEL-5. Thanks!

Best Regards,
Carl
