WBEL4 Respin2 Now available

White Box Enterprise Linux 4 Respin 2 is now available for download
via http/ftp/bittorrent. This covers Update5 from upstream plus a few
errata released since. The recent OO.o and OO.o2 updates ARE included.

The previous policy of skipping every other Update from upstream is
being reconsidered in light of the year gap it has caused. Every
quarter was a bit often for me to respin, annually seems a mite too far
in the other direction.

White Box Enterprise Linux 4 Respin 1 now available

White Box Enterprise Linux 4 Respin 1 is now available via both BitTorrent
and ftp/http. As with the original release, both i386 and x86_64
platforms are supported. This release catches up all errata through April
28.

Other than errata, the only significant change is the start of renaming
Firefox to IceWeasel. This is in response to a conversation last year
with the legal contact at the Mozilla Foundation.

Shutdown pending

As Hurricane Rita approaches the gulf coast, we are preparing for an
extended power outage. Personally, I plan to be far away by then. This
building is pretty sturdy so should weather the storm ok. As soon as
power returns and the roads are opened back up we should be back on the
air pretty fast.

White Box Enterprise Linux 4

Yes it has been delayed a few weeks longer than planned, but this baby
is finally born!

White Box Enterprise Linux 4 is now moving to the mirrors. The i386 iso
images are widely distributed as I type and the x86_64 and source images
should appear within 24 hours. The rest of the tree will be populated
as bandwidth permits. As usual a torrent is also running, currently
with two seeds and a dozen downloads already in progress.

  * This release is starting out with i386 (ia32) and AMD64
(x86_64/ia32e) ports built from the exact same source package set, which
is RHEL4 updated with all errata released through April 30.

  * The kernel is an exception to the WB naming convention. This is done
to allow 3rd party binary modules intended to be used on RHEL4 to load
on White Box Enterprise Linux 4. So while the SRPM in origSRPMS and the
SRPMS directory have the same name they are slightly different.
Specifically, the WB package is modified to build a normal package
outside of RH's Beehive build cluster and to change the name of the
module signing key to say White Box. The install media is also not
updated with the errata kernel for compatibility with driver discs.

  * Many packages are modified to change Trademarks and references to
Red Hat where such use might cause confusion. These changes go a little
deeper than on the previous 3.0 release. Their name remains on packages
they claim authorship on, of course, and it also remains in places where
changing it would cost binary compatibility. For example the full arch
is still i386-redhat-linux-gnu since many things would break if that
were to be changed.

Announcing the availability of White Box Enterprise Linux 3.0 Respin 2

White Box Enterprise Linux 3.0 Respin 2 is now available. This release
is purely a maintenance release to pick up the accumulated errata since
Respin 1 in June '04. It includes all errata issued from upstream
through the end of Feb 05. with the exception of the kernel. The kernel
is the older one issued with Red Hat, Inc.'s Update 4 so that binary
driver discs made available by 3rd party hardware vendors should be
compatible with this rebuild release.

The graphical bootsplash in the installer is gone due to a lack of space
on the boot floppy image. Apparently Anaconda can't leave it off of the
floppy and include it on the isolinux image, it is an all or nothing
thing.

The only new innovation in this release is that DVD iso images are
available. To reduce the footprint on the mirrors the DVD images are
only available via BitTorrent.

Note: The mirrors are currently still in the process of syncing up but
two already show the i386 binary iso images available and more should
appear in the next couple of hours. As soon as the rsync traffic drops
off some the BitTorrent seeds will crank up. Most of the our bandwidth
available for BT will be allocated to the DVD images.

Urgent errata for php

With reports of an exploit in active use, this errata and a quick
announcement are going out in rush mode. The formal update annoucement
will follow along with the rest of this batch.

Until the mirrors catch up you can follow links on the main webpage for
direct downloading of these errata packages.

[WBEL-users] I'm not dead yet. :)

Sorry about dropping out for a bit, been on a deployment deadline death
march followed up by a Thanksgiving roadtrip with <24 hour notice of the
change of plans. Ended up staying with folks who only had a cellphone so
no net for six days. (Yes I am still twitching spasmodically from
withdrawal.)

All but one update is now on the primary site awaiting the mirrors to
catch them. The missing one is httpd and considering the problems it has
caused I'm going to hold on hatching that pending a bit more inspection
later tonight.

Mailing list blockage repaired

Something in the plumbing of the mailing lists was stopped up. Still not
entirely sure what it was, but it appears to be unplugged now and the
backlog is flowing out now.

Errata & U3 status

A lot of packages hatched this weekend. Announcements just went out on
the ones which are errata. A fair bit of the U3 batch are still pending
as are the following errata:

gdk-pixbuf
gtk2
httpd
imlib
openoffice

They are the next priority.
