Hello UserLinux people this is Lee McKusick,
UserLinux is a wonderful distribution idea. However, for use in a
business setting, I see signs that Fedora has a strong advantage
(because it makes updating packages harder). For a personal desktop,
Ubuntu has a lot of things that work, and I use it now.
Over the last year, I had a real Linux based job (as a website monitor,
checking the operation of a personal ads website with offices in Palo
Alto California).
This employer favored Fedora for the business Linux desktop. Fedora,
with simple RPM packages, prevents users from updating or changing the
installation. That was helpful for me because it ensured no other
monitor (on the other two shifts) messed with my desktop or email.
Over that same 15 month period, I very reluctantly moved to Ubuntu
because I need USB and camera device support.
Migrating to Ubuntu was a lot of aggravation. I am approaching 60, and
with 15 years running Linux it is just a drag to be reminded how many
low level things I have forgotten how to do. Like how do you make "man
-t" print pages with page numbers? Plus, it is a drag to lose email
filters, email address books, and bookmark files and little ticky tacky
Perl and Python projects when I relocate to a new /home.
Yes, I joined UserLinux because of the plan to offer a limited
selection of Debian applications to make straightforward business
desktop.
