Hello Benjamin

I have just seen that by default on firmware 3.2rc6 the snmp agent is enabled (the mib is included in latest
release of netgear source code).

There is a big security hole in it ! It is easy to find the SSID of the acces point...
Otherwise there are some interesting info in it.

Regards.

wet54g and isl3893

Does someone owns a Linksys wet54g?

It would be great to test new images on this box...

Is wet54g an ARM system?

3COM 3CRWE454G72 and 3CRWE554G72

Greetings.

I own a 3CRWE554G72 and decided to have a look at the hardware and firmware
it uses more closely, After dissecting the firmware for both the 3CRWE554G72
and -454G72 (the former has a onboard ADMtek ADM6996 5 port ethernet switch,
the latter a single ethernet controller of unknown manufacturer, otherwise
they are identical), I think I can confidently say that neither machine runs
uClinux, unlike most of the other Intersil/Globespan Virata/Conexant ISL3893
SOC based 802.11 access points. It appears that 3Com chose to dump the
uClinux based Prism SDK in favour of their software. I have written a couple
of blog entries on what I have found, some of the readers of the list might
be interested in having a look:

http://members.atlasf1.com/david_martin/2004/07/does-your-toaster-run-linux.html
http://members.atlasf1.com/david_martin/2004/07/anatomy-of-80211-access-point.html
http://members.atlasf1.com/david_martin/2004/07/but-does-it-run-linux-or-another-slice.html

This doesn't necessarily preclude running uClinux on the 3Com boxes,
although it is probably going to require reprogramming the FLASH chip
directly via the JTAG interface, because I don't think the 3Com native
firmware loader would be able to work on a uClinux based firmware image. In
any case it would appear that 3Com are not violating the Gnu GPL in the same
way that some of the other OEM's that have put ISL3893 APs into the market
have been.

Yes, 3com has another OS. But I was wondering how to have serial access
on those APs...

Maybe the fastest way is to get the BSDL and JTAG access...

I have an MD40900 and I would really like to try out a custom made image.
It should be smaller than 1.6Mb.

Developing on the isl3893

Hi,
for your information: on the system i'm working on, apart from boa
(which is next, i'm going to replace it by fnord i think) i've
replaced all of the userspace applications in the SDK i use with
new versions. That wasn't too hard, just some minor things remain
(like syslog from the new busybox not working properly)
I also have added MPU support to SHM in the kernel (for syslog with a
circular buffer) and that seems to work okay.

Things that i havn't touched yet are the kernel (which really could need
an update) and the core libraries (uClibc).

Anyone else working actively on the isl3893, who has maybe updated
the kernel or the libc already?

Gruß,
Erich Schubert

I'm working on extracting a clean patch out of the wet54g and netgear
(the dotconfig are the same), and trying to compile without MVC support.

It would be nice if we can try to update the kernel to the latest 2.4
version (25 and 26).

I put here some dotconfig for the kernel that compiles fine:

I need to know how to access in tftpboot in the booter (see the dmesg on
main page):

http://bh.udev.org/filez/wireless/isl3893/kernel/

Phil presented emdebian at Bordeaux RMLL, and we thought about making
emdebian packages for this platform.

In fact I want to know if it's possible to have only the booter which

Hi,

Yes, we really could need that... In working with the 2.4 kernel
included with the SDK i managed to find a reproducible kernel crash, the
trivial fix is included in the latest release candidates (maybe i missed
the actual release, i don' use 2.4 here myself any more)
It was fixed as part of the bridge updates, it's non-critical since you
need root privileges anyway to trigger it.

What i'd really like to do is setting up a newer libc.
But to use recent uclinux one has to write a lot of configuration files,
profiles and so on. Adding a new arch to uclinux is not easy. I had
started doing so, but it didn't even build clean - some part apparently
tried to build with FPU emulation, some other part without (and i don't
even know if we do have a FPU... i guess not)

Well, as said before i don't see any use of the "Debian" thing here.
It is too different from the main Debian platform to be merged.
In fact i think we'll never be able to use this platform with free
software only, the MVC is too low-level and complex for that.
As long as the system _depends_ on a binary-only firmware, we would have
to put everything into "contrib" and non-free accoring to the DFSG.

Emdedian goal is to have a manageable way to deal with sources...

And to produce binaries...
