Gene, using galternatives as we were talking about off-list, you can dig
into there and set your default browser in stone. Damn, you made me look
go look... x-server-browser. Click on that and then on the browser you
want set.

BUT!! With Thunderbird, it don't care. It still opens firefox, although

Gene, even firefox will go absolutely APE if you try to launch a java
script without there being any java. It'll open tabs so fast you cannot
count them. With 6 cores and 16 gigs, it takes awhile to eat it all up,
but it finally does. So, you must be set to "open new windows", as
opposed to "open new tabs". Setting it like that you have only one
browser to close instead of several hundred. I'd sure start there!

Have a beer.

Then remove any package that doesn't allow you to control it's behavior.

I haven't been following this conversation until a few minutes ago and
then went back and put back all the deleted messages in this thread.

What I suspect is happening is that you have a corrupted file system
which needs to be repaired. Whenever you boot your system your file
system is automatically checked for errors and the errors corrected but
believe me, as I know from first hand experience, that this does not
always work and one has to manually run 'e2fsck' to correct the
corruption. If you don't know how to do this then simply ask. (BTW, I am
assuming that your filesystem is in ext3 or ext4 format?)

The other possibility in your case is that your HD is starting to go
belly-up. Do you have S.M.A.R.T. installed and running? (How old is the
HDD anyway?)

Firefox and chrome chewing CPU since updates

So, I was away all week on vacation (during that time my system was
halted and unplugged) and when I got back I had 56 or so updates waiting
for me (Ubuntu 12.04 64bit) including a kernel update and various other
things.

I applied these and rebooted. Now whenever I start a browser, either
the default Firefox or Chrome (I use the main/stable version from the
dl.google.com repository), it sucks up TONS of CPU.

Firefox is usually chewing at least 60% CPU and sometimes jumps to 120%
or more (I have an Intel Core2 Quad). top(1) says my system load is
constantly at 1.3 or above. This is with no extra tabs open and
about:blank on the single tab I do have.

Chrome is even worse, since it's multi-processing: when I start it there
are 3 to 4 chrome processes running each taking between 25% and 45% of a
CPU, and my system load goes up to 2.2 or higher, constantly.

The browsers seem to WORK just fine; I can surf the web and no problems
with internet connections, etc. Just my system is running like crazy,
not doing anything.

This was never a problem before these updates. Has anyone else seen
this, or have any idea what's going on? It's very odd that it's both
Firefox and Chrome, I admit, but if I stop them the load goes down and
none of my other apps (which, admittedly, I don't use too many different
apps--mostly Emacs, rxvt, Evolution, etc.) seem to show this problem.

Has anyone else seen this behavior? I've tried strace on these but see
nothing interesting: chrome seems to be hanging on a futex (but not fast

It seems every time there's an upgrade things get messed up inside. Maybe I don't understand the Linux
philosophy enough. I'm not a system person. I use Ubuntu on my computers I enjoy trying to figure things out
but it's very frustrating.

Re: Firefox and chrome chewing CPU since updates

Nataraj,

What ended up doing is reinstalling Ubuntu 12.04 several times after installing some drivers. I still
can't get my printer to work & the mic works but I can't connect Skype to it.

VHS to computer save query

Hi all ,
have just managed to get a Kaiser Baas DVD maker to work,( installed
mercurial)
in Ubuntu 12.04 with TV Time, is there anyway I can save the played
VHS from here and write to dvd? Some of my tapes are getting old.
A friend tried to do it for me on Win7, (the kaiser baas device is his),
but it will only do a black and white
in Win7, have colour in TV Time here on Ubuntu.
Many thanks in advance for any help.
take care
Winton

This doesn't answer your question, but:-

If your tapes are of commercial origin, more and more old stuff is being
"digitally remastered" from the original tapes and is available through
e.g. Amazon. For instance, I'm sure I looked several times in the past
but could not find a of DVD "Dune" - the version with Patrick Stewart
and Sting, but it is now available. Also bought "Two Mules for Sister
Sara" and "Chato's Land". For the few quid they cost it's not worth
messing around trying to convert them yourself IMHO. Also, at long last,
got a copy of "Back and Fourth" by Lindisfarne on a 2012 remastered CD.

OTOH if they're tapes of personal material such as weddings and
holidays, yes you need to get them converted. Consider though, is it
worth the trouble of doing it yourself? Aren't there loads of specialist
services that are set up to do this for a fixed fee who probably have
