Corrupt display after upgrade to Lucid

Hi folks,
I took the daring step of upgrading karmic on my laptop to lucid and
now get a garbled screen that's impossible to read. I thing it's an
XORG issue - maybe the resolution? Suffice to say, it is infuriating
because most of my work is on this damned machine and I'm totally
stuck. Please help if possible.
Thanks

Huh??

Try 'sudo dpkg -i <whatever>.deb'

OTOH, Synaptic is probably the better way to go.

If you're having trouble with rss feeds, go into Synaptic and search for rss....

With this little detail, it sounds like the video card and/or monitor
specs in your xorg.conf file are wrong - refresh rate ranges or
resolution settings maybe.

You can try mucking with the xorg.conf file if you have any clue what
you're doing, but it can be tricky if you've never done it before.
You can also try renaming the file to something else and see if the
system will create a working default one for you (and if it creates
one that doesn't work, you can play with the differences to find
something that might work).

Once you have it working at all, you can try tweaking it with the
monitor preferences and display controls in the system menus.

I tried to force install v. 0.97 but I cannot login - gives plugin

I have googled a lot?

I have two production servers running a small and moderately large
PostgreSQL 8.4.5 cluster an I just upgraded with the usual zero
ill-effects.

Hmm that didn't work. Anyone have other thoughts? Maybe I should file
a bug?

Today's upgrade screwed up my places menu

Today's upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit (Included Linux Kernel 2.6.35-23
generic) went a little crazy on my machine. Now, when I click on Home
Folder, Desktop, Documents, etc. instead of a copy of Nautilus, I get
Appearance Preferences overlaid with an error message:

[item from Places menu] does not appear to be a valid theme.

For example: "Desktop" does not appear to be a valid theme.

Who needs to know about this?
