santa rosa macbook pro in feisty/gutsy

Hello,

I am wondering, are the new santa rosa chipset macbook pros expected or hoped
to be working smoothly "out of the box" with gutsy? There are currently many
known bugs at ubuntuforums.org that are not reported in launchpad. These
mainly focus around sound (doesn't work), suspend (ditto), and fan speed
control (missing in gutsy; a heat concern). Sound seems to be particularly
troublesome; even recompiling a new alsa did not work for the people I've seen
discuss the issue.

These three threads summarize the situation (mostly w/ feisty):
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=474144
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=479761
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=468065

There are also many untriaged bugs in launchpad dealing with older versions of
the MB/MBP. One report involving a new MBP from the start of June discusses
not being able to boot from gutsy tribe 1 live cd (probably a video issue, as
he could boot from alternate). Anyway, I appreciate everyone's work on
ubuntu and mac/intel hardware. :)

thanks for reading,

Brian

I'm not advocating one or the other (I don't/won't use gmail), but you
can get a free Yahoo email account with *unlimited* storage (well I
suppose in the same sense that you used to get 'unlimited' dialup hours
on some ISP's):

Do a google for Kompozer It's a carry-on for NVU and works fine.

And where are your emails stored, and your domain hosted? In your own
machine, that no one else has access to, or in a remote server? What's
the difference between your mail being stored in an ISP, google or a
rental server (in respect to your privacy)?

I'm not crying wolf here, but I though a bit about this before
creating my gmail account (considering the ads stuff, the indexing my
data, and all other evil possibilities that came through my mind),
weighted it, and concluded the cost of total privacy exceeds my
budget. Nevertheless, I have access to email accounts in my university
which I can trust more or less, knowing personally the sysadmins, and
there's always cryptography.

You can "trust" one particular company better than another, or you can
trust no-one. That never changes the fact that your emails fly plain
text over the net (well, not in google's case, if the other end
supports SSL), just asking to be sniffed by malicious people. There
are too much variables, and the email is needed. One has (as you seem
to have done) to weight one's needs and the known hazards to choose
the best possible solution.

But there is no privacy nirvana to be bought. You are always exposed

Where do I want to copy them?  Ie got ´em in /usr/share/java, now.
Thanks, Bob

Thanks. I'll give it a try. NVU is at 1.0, Kompozer is more recent?

I bought a new PCI wireless card for it's Atheros chipset and reinstalled Ubuntu 7.04, Got a message about restricted drivers; it recognized my adapter! :-) Tried to configure the adapter with the Network Tools/Manager and while I was able to select one of the ESSIDs it saw and add the WEP password, I was unable to use any network tools (ping, traceroute, etc.) When I tried iwconfig, ath0 had no ESSID or nickname and when I tried to give it one, the connand failed!! What is going on here???
<blush> Forgot to use sudo! OK, now it has a nickname, an ESSID and an AP, but IU still cannot ping, etc.!!

I've got the same problem, using Network Manager I cannot connect to WEP networks.  The solution is to go into the network properties, and deselect "Roaming Mode" on the wireless adapter.  Then you can type in the network name, WEP key, and tell it to use DHCP etc.  A reboot should have you back up properly.  (On some machines this works right away but on others Network Manger just won't let go of the card...)

If anyone can give us a better solution involving installing some packages or tweaking another file that would be great!  :)

I find Network Manager great for WPA networks and open networks as well as VPNs, but I hate having to unlock the keyring after a reboot etc. for my network to connect so I went to using a static config in my /etc/network/interfaces.  This unfortunately breaks the best feature of Network Manager - the intelligence to use a wired connection when one is plugged in and switch to wireless when unplugged or told to do so.

Anyone know of a fix for that?

This message is saying that you need one of these packages installed,
and listed in the dpkg control files (ie shown by dpkg -l).

They are available in the multiverse repository. Add that repository,
then install whichever of the four packages you want to use.
sun-java5-jre and sun-java6-jre are the run-time packages, while
sun-java5-jdk and sun-java6-jdk are the full development packages. Java
6 may not be available for dapper, but is available for edgy in
edgy-backports (described in the Software Sources application on edgy as
'Backported updates' in the internet updates tab).

> Where do I want to copy them? Ie got ´em in /usr/share/java, now.
The Ubuntu package will install in standard locations. If you have
installed from a Sun binary distribution, you need to remove that
installation and replace it with the equivalent Ubuntu package. This
will satisfy the dependency that the LimeWire package is missing.
