connecting my laptop to the Internet

I have had a thought about getting my Internet connection tempoarily working
in Ubuntu Edgy until I can get my desktop sorted out with Linux or buy a
wireless Router for home use with my BT account and have both desktop and
laptop machines networked.
Is there a way of connecting my laptop using my BT Voyager Broadband MODEM
which someone at one of the Linux groups I attend did manage to get working
on his laptop as he was able to access the web with it which I normally use
for my desktop machine without affecting my connection settings for Voxbar
which is where the group is held so I can switch between the two without
affecting the settings for Voxbar and basically run my BT account until I
can get Ubuntu on the Desktop so then I can do a bit more work with Linux
and maybe in that way apt-get a copy of Speakup, Espeak, Speech-dispatcher
etc and have a go at trying to get them installed and configured on the
laptop?

Re: ATI Driver

I have ati radeon xpress 200m and it works fine, you might want to clean up what easyubuntu did and install the fglrx binaries from the repos. Mine worked find under the mesa drivers but I didn't have 3d acceleration and I wanted it. I think there is a howto on ubuntuguide.org   But if you've already tried that I have no idea what your problem may be.

vmware player sudo on edgy ?

Hi all,

I have downloaded and installed vmplayer via ' vmware-config.pl' Its pretty
amazing :)

Only query is that I have to start vmware with

sudo /usr/bin/vmplayer

Googling around apparently vmplayer is supposed to be run as a normal user. I
am all for that but I get

dave <at> dave-comp:~/vmware-player-distrib$ /usr/bin/vmplayer
bash: /usr/bin/vmplayer: Permission denied
dave <at> dave-comp:~/vmware-player-distrib$

I tried chmod +x ing it but then I get permission denied on more files. How do
you guys start vmplayer on edgy ? Does anyone know a fix ?

Re: java 2RE

Hi, Norman!

So... first things first... I tried on my laptop with Ubuntu Edgy and it runs fine. Both with Java 1.5.0_08 and 1.6.0... Now let's look at what's going on here.

First... the "L&F" messages are simple information messages telling you that AstroStack3LE has found 3 possible look and feels that you should be able to chose from : Metal, CDE/Motif (yeah, we've stuck with that horror for a long time), and GTK+. All normal. No worries here.

The first one is telling you that it can't find "default.apf".

I get the same error message when I copy the .jar file to a directory that doesn't contain the rest of the application files. And it doesn't prevent anything from working. So, although I don't really know the application, I suspect that this message isn't really an error but more of an information, and that it will be created in time when you save preferences.

Try it without the "-Xmx256m" parameter (it starts fine like this for me).

I would check a few things...

1) Did you download and unzip this as your normal user, or as root?
2) Are you running it as root or as your normal user? (I did download, unzip and run as my normal user).

I've tried it on a machine in 1024x768 where I don't get the "java.awt.Dimension" notification... and also on a machine with 1280x1024 resolution, on which I do... no problems there.

So I'm really at a loss here.

Do you have an exotic graphics configuration (DISPLAY not set to :0.0, or maybe are you running aiglx or fglrx)?

Have you asked AstroStack support as to what may be causing their application to not run on your machine? Because for me it runs fine.

Gilles.

As a test example, download AppGate's MindTerm (SSH terminal written 100% in Java and using a nice, but not too complex set of features) : wget http://www.appgate.com/products/80_MindTerm/110_MindTerm_Download/mindterm_3.0.1-bin.zip unzip mindterm_3.0.1-bin.zip cd mindterm_3.0.1-bin java -jar mindterm.jar If, after, maybe, a couple of warning diagnostic lines in your terminal window, and a few popups to click, you get a nice window saying "appGATE MindTerm" then your Java environment is properly set and you should have no more problems. Note: As a Sun person, I should write Java(TM) everywhere... but what the heck. :) The aim is to help you get the stuff running nicely. Tell us how it goes! Gilles. norman wrote:

Do you need the latest java ? If not, there are packages from the multiverse repository you can install: - sun-java5-bin <-- this will pull in the runtime as a dependency
The application I want to run specifies J2SE JRE. I have tried sun-java5.bin but the application does not fully run. For example the various windows appear and seem to work except that images needed do not show. Thanks for your suggestions. Norman

There's no KDE or GNOME compiler. It's all GNU.

No special graphics just using as supplied with mother board.

I have been in touch with AstroStack and they are puzzled as well.

Let us be sure we are not talking at cross purposes. The application
starts by providing three windows on the monitor, one wide one and two
square ones above the wide one, side by side. Now, start Build filelist
and select some .jpg files from img folder in AstroStack3LE folder. I
believe an image should appear in window marked Monitor 1. Do you get
this because I do not?

I have an old machine on which I ran AstroStack many months ago. I shall
try to get it working and, if I can, I will communicate the result.

Good decision ;).

I also use a similar environment, but probably you will find that
opening many xterms could be an annoyance (in case you use many of
them).

Using a terminal emulator which allows to open different tabs could be
also an alternative. konsole or gnome-terminal are great programs for
that.

OTOH, probably you don't need many terminals since you can compile,
debug and run your programs within Emacs.

AFAIK that card (Radeon Xpress 200M) also supports 1280x800
resolution.
