Fwd: Kubuntu Council Status/Elections

Subject: Kubuntu Council Status/Elections

Getting elections set up has taken longer than we thought, so rather than lose
half the council membership this week, the KC has decided the existing members
whose terms are about to expire should be extended three weeks to give time to
prepare an election.

People who've considered running for Kubuntu Council in the past should be
considering it again. It is mosts certainly not just for developers. Any
Kubuntu member is eligible to run.

Scott K

P.S. On that note, I'd appreciate it if someone who's subscribed to the user
list would forward this there.

Not too clear on what you want.

You can save sessions and the usual with an browser you can save files
from a web page.

Each user has his own ~/.mozilla directory.
If your intention is to have another user using the .mozilla of another
user you would have to copy it across to that user's home directory as
root and change ownership as root.

The idea is that every user has his own environment and access is only
allowed to that user, root or any others as defined in users in /etc/group.
# grep users /etc/group
users:x:100:
If users are added to that group then may be they can have access to
read and write to another user's files but I have no tried it.
e.g
users:x:100:fred,tim,danny

Sid.

Minitube Problem

Howdy folks;

I got, "Minitube", a few hours ago, and since then I've
been giving mkdir some exercize, while trying to figure
it out.

It's supposed to be a way of watching youtube videos
without a lot of the overhead, or using flash to do it.

When it comes up, it shows some video thumbnails down
the left side of the screen, and they jump around a
little, but thats about all that happensm except for
the error mesage:

Phonon error: "The file or folder www.youtube.com does
not exist." 1

Anyone got a clue?

Chromium daily builds

Does anyone know what's going on with Chromium daily builds?  I've been using the daily build ppa for well over a year and it pretty much stopped generating daily builds at the begining of the year.  The latest version on my Linux machines is 18.0.1025.168~r134367, but I noticed that on Win7 it updated recently to v19.  The linux builds used to be (mostly) 2 versions ahead of what was current on the Winboxes.

Is there a different repo for 12.04?

Apache2 ???

Howdy folks;

Does anyone know if apache2 comes with some sort of,
"site/webpage builder", software, or is there something
different, (external to apache2), for that?

Kmail2 is snappy here.... when its running. But it might crash 4 times in 5
mins - - sometimes as soon as you restart it - - and then it might run for an
hour or two. And it has other severe problems with filters, folders, etc.

They really did a number on it... and I would think there would have been
some fixes coming by now. I went through the long process of detailing a
crash including installing a bunch of debug stuff and when I got to the final
stage, I found out my problem was a dupe of many others. So I won't do that
again.

Not sure how long I will deal with the issues.

I have all the desktop search stuff enabled, which might be your problem. Try
increasing the memory used under "advanced settings" of desktop search.

[precise]: how to get kontact working?

kontact worked OK in oneiric.

Following an "upgrade" to precise, what happens is that on the GUI interface I
get a message:

Personal Information Management system is starting

and after about 30 seconds this changes to:

The Akonadi personal information management service is not operational

While this is happening, on the console I get this mess:

Refraining with some difficulty from a rant, I simply ask...

How do I get kontact to work in precise?

I have many hundreds of contacts, as well as my calendar sitting inside
kontact somewhere, and I don't know how to get to them.

If someone has a non-KDE-specific suggestion for a PIM I'd be happy to
entertain suggestions so I don't find myself in this situation again.

good morning     ryan      and all other members of lis

thank You for Your friendly email.

first something funny bad about win:
win needed me to clean every evening 2 gb files
dirty things
because win is during surfing producing many nonsense files.

speicial outlook

so kubuntu
or linux is fine and nice.

I think there is no harm kubuntu can do
because it is only hardy

and I like to use gedit as editor.

my question new about operating system:

Button synaptik
where can I find a program

for see swf or flash?

how can I search.

second question:
where ist synaptic searching:
on cd or in the internet?

is there a problem
if I install 2011 ocelot and keep it
for 10 years.
or is it necessary to
do every year download the new  kubuntu and install it?

Good afternoon, I hope your Sunday is going well. I just got back from church, so sorry I wasn't able to reply sooner. By problems, do you mean the boot issues, or problems once you are actually in the operating system? There is no difference between the fall (autumn) and the spring releasees. The only difference is that one is released in April (spring in the northern hemisphere, fall, or autumn in the southern hemisphere). Each release adds a new set of features, but there are some which only update the K Desktop Environment (KDE). I did not really understand much about the release cycle at all when I first started using Linux, so I will explain:

Kubuntu releases are made pretty much religiously on a six-month bases, the first release of the year is usually made in mid-April, with the exception of 6.06, in which the release had to be put further into the year because Kubuntu/Ubuntu was not ready yet to be released. The second and last release of the year is always made in October. Thanks, and have a great week!

In Christ,
Ryan

I forgot to answer one of your questions: yes, it is possible to boot Kubuntu in text mode, but I am not very good with it (knowledge-wise).

The only difference between Lucid and Oneiric is that they are two different versions of Kubuntu. Between Lucid and Oneiric, Maverick and Natty were released.

What it means by Oneiric has support but Hardy doesn't means that Oneiric knows how to deal with the hardware you are referring to. Hardy doesn't know what to do with the hardware you are referring to. Thanks!

the problem ist not generic or so is one version older hardy
and all other systems like SuSe crash even old versions.

another question:
can I use ubuntu kubuntu xubuntu
with very old alptop
12 years old
bought with win me.

can I user ocelot?

what is difference lucid and ocelot
because
january 2012 both are new.

what does mean: Hardy has no support but ocelot has support
is it like
gates gives support win 7 but noch win 98?

PS
is it possible
to boot kubuntu in text modus?

hardy=no problem
ubuntu older than hardy also booting fine.

why?
I dont know.
I suggest, hardy is checking vga before changing to grafik
ocelot does not check it and crash.

Good morning, Tobias. Very good questions you have. I think I can answer the first half-way, and I am sure I can answer your second question. Do you get past the boot screen with Oneiric and Lucid? In the boot screen (GRUB), to boot into different operating systems (different versions of Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu/etc, Windows or other OS), when inside GRUB, select between the different operating systems by using the down and up keys on the keyboard. Then, press the enter/return key on the keyboard to boot the selected operating system. Do you know this is a VGA problem? If so, I have no clue how to solve this, unless you install drivers for VGA. If you install VGA driver software, you are installing this inside the operating system, not GRUB. Therefore, if this is a GRUB problem, the problem will still persist with GRUB, even after installing driver software.

For your second question, this is a Kubuntu-only support centre. Ubuntu questions should be asked in Ubuntu Forums or Ask Ubuntu. I hope this helps!

I guess there must be a way to see the EFI partition from inside Windows - sometimes called the 'system' or 'hidden' partition. Not sure though, because first thing I do with a new computer is to erase Windows completely.

However, on a EFI-system, when installing Linux you'll have to create an EFI partition (around 100 MB) anyway and put grub-efi on it. On my system that is sda2.  As far as I can tell there is no way of getting rid of this UEFI rigmarole and revert to the good, old BIOS.

Good afternoon, I hope your day is going well. I usually will reply-all, if that is what you mean. This is because other people on the list can see my emails and if I say something wrong or incorrect, they can reply and correct it. I also do it just so everybody is in the loop on what is going on.

If Oneiric (and newer) crash after trying to boot, and hardy (and older) boot fine, then it must be an internal error, or an error that is in the system when Oneiric/newer boots. It may very well be the VGA problem as you suggest. I have never experienced this, so I am able to give you information to the best of my abilities without being able to see what you are seeing, so if I don't solve the problem or figure out an answer, I am sorry. Does Persistent boot? Persistent is the newest stable version of Kubuntu. Thanks!

Thank you!

I don't see it often enough on this list, but feel it needs saying.

Thank you for the quick feedback and usable assistance. Hopefully, I'll be able to pass it on sometime.

deleting firefox 10.02 from kpackagekit in k10.10 mm

can anyone help

I am having trouble with firefox 10.02 when I downloaded as an update
thru kpackagekit in my
k10.10 mm, after downloaded and installed it always came back
crashing, so I clonned back
to my backup disc k10.10 mm with the old firefox 9.0.1. But now I have
still showing with my
kpackagekit updates the firefox 10.02, so how do I get rid of it from
the updates?

Compiling fails -- KDE libraries not found

Because I *hate* Amarok2 and its inability to sync playlists across devices, and Clementine doesn't seem to talk well to my MTP device, I'm trying to install Amarok 1.4 on my Pangolin box.

I've been following the instructions I found here:

but when I try to configure the file I get the following error:

in the prefix, you've chosen, are no KDE libraries installed. This will fail.
So, check this please and use another prefix!

Anyone have any ideas on how I can approach this?
