install/ problems in edubuntu

I am a new user of Edubuntu 12.04.  Have installed it on three machines but only one worked out of the box.

Problem no 1:       With the other 2 machines the installation does not complete ...it goes thro all the steps and then hangs on the window that has "Install"
in the grey bar at the top;  in fact this is the window that says "Who are you?"

This is the window that asks for your name/the user name and the password.

The only choices that gives is  BACK   and CONTINUE.    When i click on Contiue nothing happens.

Why does this window not close?

Problem no 2:       when I close the above window, and click on Start LTSP live  it seems to go thro the motions but again does not close the box
"Configuring LTS"

Problem no 3:  Then when I do a PXE boot connected to the server it goes thro and ask for  a user name....etc... I just log in as guest but then it gives me a window with 4 graphics and everything is garbled, ubreadable.  Why?

Can anyone help me please.

Creating a school computer lab with edbuntu and ltsp

Hello there,
I'm used stetting up school computer labs in the following fashion:
1. A group of client computers running windows xp or 7
2.  A widows 2003 server with
- 2 NICs
- lots of ram
- a system partition
- a hidden partition for log files
- a data partition for users
- a partition for ISO files and programs that have to eunn from the server.
3.  Workstations joined ro the domain forcing users ro login with domain credentials.
4. Roaming or
mandatory profiles.
5. Group polocies to enforce certain settings

I'd like to try the same thing with edbuntu and ltsp. So , basically, can I
1.  Instal edbuntu on a box with lots of ram and partitions (raid5?)
2. Then install LTSI
3. Then star the work stations  on PXE mode to connect to the server?

Thunderbird issue

Good Afternoon All,

I have two users that had Thunderbird open when the server crashed to
the point I had to hard reset it. After it came back up I cleared the
lock files in the users home directory preventing it from opening. It
opens now, but it will not close cleanly. You can select File->Quit or
click the "X" and Thunderbird will disappear, but if I check top, the
process continues to run. It doesn't seem to want to release the lock
and .parentlock files. If I manually kill the process, they go away and
the user can then reopen. I'm using Thunderbird 11 running LTSP on
Ubuntu 10.04. Any one have any ideas or suggestions how to fix this? It
has become a pain to have to come in each morning and kill lingering
processes for users to work normally. I google searched and haven't come
up with anything that works. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

A PC for my grandchildren

Hello Edubuntu comunity!

I am new to this forum. Hope to be in the right place to comment my project. If not please tell me where should I go...

My son has an old Compaq desktop (Pentium 4, 512MB RAM, 40GB HD) that he wants to dedicate as a PC for my four grandchildren. He have asked me to help him in this project (I am retired and have plenty of time).
These are the main features we are looking for:

1) The system must be robust and stable, I mean "kids proof". We have the experience of give them a Windows based PC and have to reinstall it again. We don't know exactly what did they do, but the fact is that some system critical files were damaged. For this reason my son says that he prefers a Linux based system. It is a common belief that Linux is less vulnerable than Windows, either regarding malicious attack as well as user catastrophic faults.
2) I am not a Linux guy, so the installation and maintenance tasks must be "novice proof". A support channel will be a plus.
3) Since there will be several kids sharing the PC, there must be an easy "sign in" procedure to identify each user. Each kids must have his/her own repository to save his/her creations avoiding the others to destroy them. Besides, there should be a way to share contents between them (a sort of common repository or a send/receive method).
4) The system must be intuitive to use by a young kid (2 to 8 years old and growing ...) Ideal if the desktop could be customized for each kid.
5) There should be a good set of pre-packed applications suited for kids and an easy way to install new applications. We are looking for educational games/activities and homework tools.
6) Internet access must be allowed but controlled by some sort of filters managed by parents. Better if there is a way to subscribe to a community maintained black list.
7) Access to frequently visited sites on the Internet (like school site, on line educational tools) should be facilitated by means of icons or easy access controls created by parents.
8) There should be a easy web-searching interface.
9) E-mail, chats and similar social media must be allowed but parental controlled.
10) We are in Costa Rica, a Spanish speaking country, but the children attend a bilingual school where most classes are taught in English. So, we plan to install the software in English, but it could be nice to have an easy language switch and some language tools (dictionary, translator, spelling).

I have read some reviews about Linux for Kids. It sounds to me that Edubuntu fits most (if not all) of our requirements... however some reviews states that Edubuntu is not best suited for home user because it is aimed for schools... (may be they are outdated reviews)..

I will appreciate if somebody can provide me some URL's to documents detailing the features and characteristics of Edubuntu, so I can check how well Edubuntu meets our
wishes. Of course, direct comments/answers addressing some of our requirements are welcome.

Thanks in advance for your attention.

Hope to be soon another Edubuntu fan!

Synchronize two LTSP servers' /home?

Hello,

I hope everyone is doing well.

Our school has moved to it's new purpose-built facility and things are
working perfectly -- the building was wired so that all network jacks
in the building are "home-run" back to the main lan room, where the
LTSP server is. Thus the different bottle-necks we used to suffer
from using single cable -> switch single cable -> switch are gone.

One thing I need to resolve is how to sync the user's files in our old
building to our new building. Some of the users still go back and
forth, and we have an Edubuntu server at each location. Is there a
recommended way to do so? Is it as simple as activating Ubuntu One
(since it's built-into Edubuntu) for those users? Or is there
something better.

The two machines are not identical, so I'd only want to sync the user's files.

Thank you very much!
Joseph

Edubuntu 12.04 LTS is now available

After 6 months of preparation, it's with great pride that the Edubuntu
development team announces today the release of Edubuntu 12.04 LTS.

As the first Long Term Support release of the Edubuntu project, this
version will be supported for 5 years (until April 2017).
The Edubuntu development team will also provide "point releases" in
sync with Ubuntu's to offer you new installation medias containing all
the latest bugfixes.

For this release, we focused on stability and bug fixes to deliver the
most stable and best translated Edubuntu release ever.

You can try it online: http://www.edubuntu.org/weblive
or download it: http://www.edubuntu.org/download

Additional download links in case the Edubuntu website is overloaded:
 - http://www.stgraber.org/download/releases/edubuntu/12.04/

You can learn more at: http://www.edubuntu.org/news/12.04-release

The full release notes are also available at:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PrecisePangolin/ReleaseNotes/Edubuntu

Users of Edubuntu 11.10 can also directly upgrade to 12.04 LTS from
the update manager. Note that because of the usual release load on the
archive mirrors, it's recommended to wait a few days before upgrading.

LTSP server crash

Hi,
I messed my device names up and managed to lose my thin clients in the
process. I'm running 10.04 LTS, by the way.
Originally the device facing the Internet (via an Ipcop proxy server)
was eth0 and the device facing my clients was eth1. The Internet
interface is currently eth1 and, to make room for it, I've shifted the
clients to eth2 (by editing /etc/network/interfaces). I updated my ssh
image and keys, but the clients are still not making any contact (i.e.,
they're not booting).
Here's my /etc/network/interfaces file:
===================
# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# The primary network interface
auto eth2
iface eth2 inet static
	address 192.168.0.254
	netmask 255.255.255.0

And here's the output from ifconfig:
