Advantages of FLOSS

Hi,

Maybe the document referenced in this article can be used as a good
argument for free and open source software! Not that important to home
users, but it can be quite a valid argument for schools.

Kind regards

Philippe

vista pr, 200th support point = champagne, 1000 cd's arrived

Hi all,

Three things:

1. I haven't found the time to create a Vista press release. I should
have given this responsibility to someone else. I might try to work on
it tomorrow, but not sure. If anyone with writing experience is
interested in taking up this task, please:
  * Read the relevant section of the meeting minutes:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BelgianTeam/Leuven_2007-01-06
  * Work on it at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BelgianTeam/PR/Vista_2007-01-2x (nothing but
brainstorming there yet)
2. I'd like to be able to give the 200th support point a bottle of
champagne and make some noise around that. We're at n° 199 right
now... Anyone got a spare bottle (or money to spare for one)?
3. Three boxes of CD's 6.10 have arrived at my place, +- 1000 CD's in
total, quite a few of those Edubuntu.

Hardware for the Antwerp fair

I prepared an AMD Sempron64 2800+ with 512MB ram for the fair.
It's running Kubuntu Dapper 64Bit.
Just a basic install + firefow + thunderbird + some pgp stuff

now i'm looking for some eye candy for the fair.
Any recomendations?

Re: Hardware for the Antwerp fair

You could try to run beryl on it...

I've found a volunteer for the Antwerp Fair so I've put his name on the list.
http://forum.ubuntu-nl.org/message/64546#p64546

Let's hope he 'll introduce himself here ...

Remember Beryl is still alpha software, I'm running it on Dapper with
XGL and have a few lockups a day + quite a bit memory use.

Maybe just as an example of what's possible and what comes in the
future. We don't want hanging machines due to alpha software when
promoting a stable OS, do we?

dipro ghent next sunday

hi,
we are trying to get an interesting stand without too many resources.
any tips are welcome!

i have home baked cd's (about 50 live installs of edgy and dapper)
will have a pc (edubuntu installed, edgy grade, beryl installed but not yet working).
an 8-point electricity power block, cable (20m), refreshments, sweets, nuts (ubuntu for...)
so i would't invite too much press at the moment.

also have an ancient laptop running debian (with fluxbox) maybe example to do more with less.
(no pun intended)

anyone living in the ghent vicinity is invited to come and watch, or to help.
maybe we will look like a small bunch of guerrillero's, but only your help may improve on that look:-)
we will give free cd's only to those who listen to us first, and only to those who seem to want to run it.

maybe the better advocacy of ubuntu lies in being a group, not an enterprise.

Make it Ubuntu 64 bit. We need to market _one_ platform to new users.
They can and will discover the rest of the free software world
afterwards. Just don't force them into confusion from the very
beginning, or they won't even bother making the jump.
