Hello everyone!

Ubuntu Artwork Team,

Hey everyone! I've come to introduce myself. My name is T.J. Barber, and I am a Christian, web designer, budding artist, photographer, music lover, and Linux user since 2005. I first used Ubuntu in 2007, and I really believe that it's the Linux of the future (not including Android). I think I've used every version of Ubuntu since 7.10. I have Ubuntu 11.10 on both my desktop and laptop.

I've also been inspired by the beautiful work of PIXAR Animation Studios, their spirit of creativity, and the way they convey emotion by using a math-crunching computer. But in the end it's the best art I've ever seen, and the only art I really can laugh or cry with. I've always been touched by that, and it's something I aspire to. Though I may never make someone cry with a photo, I know I can make them laugh or just make their day better overall. And I also see Apple doing a similar thing, but the freedom loving side of me comes out when using Apple hardware and software. Another thing that affects me deeply is community, and though you do have a community of Apple fanboys they're not creating and supporting together in the way Ubuntu does (I love Jono Bacon's book The Art of Community, if you couldn't tell!).

Sorry to go long, but I really love both art and Ubuntu and want to see these loves merged. I'd really like to be part of the Ubuntu Art Team. I enjoy taking photos and I'm working on learning Inkscape. There's a lot to learn about graphic design, and even more to explore with photography.

Hope to talk to you all soon! I'm on Launchpad (https://launchpad.net/~tjbarber09) and Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/tjbarber09). =)

God bless!

New Ubuntu Wallpaper Artwork Set Idea

Hi All,

Just wondering what people's thoughts are on a new wallpaper set for Ubuntu and maybe other OS's. I would name the  set Night Lights.

The photos I would like to include are located here (and more may be added later on):https://picasaweb.google.com/hawks008/NightLights?authuser=0&feat=directlink.

If you have any thought feel free to direct reply or group reply.

Thanks,

Ubuntu 12.04 DVD Cover - WIP

So hey to you all again!
I haven't been around here in last year, as I jumped over 10.04 and 11.10 editions, but since Ubuntu is gaining some solidness again, I will do some artwork related to it again.

This is the basic DVD cover concept I have on my mind for upcoming Ubuntu 12.04 LTS edition.
This is just a starting point. It might, and it might not look like final version, but I think the main shell is there.
Comparing to my previous covers I wanted this to be the most clean and the most effective one. And at the same time the most effect-less when it comes to layer effects. Even I didn't follow ubuntu brand guidelines strictly, there are enough elements to make this cover recognizable and ubuntuish.
Final version will include covers for all type of media boxes, like CD boxes, DIY paper sleeves (like official ones), etc... But for now it is just a DVD cover concept.

Here is the preview:

And here is the link to work itself:

new icon themes

Hello everyone,
the icons looks pretty outdated even after changing many themes. In terms of visual appeal, I think there is a long way for Ubuntu when compared with Windows 7. Please look into development of more visually attractive icons and themes. Please forward your opinions and suggestions.

Best Regards,
Murali Krishna

Hello!

Hi,

I would like to contribute to the Ubuntu Artwork Team.

I've been an avid user of free / open source software since 1994 - using Linux exclusively as my desktop since 1996.
I've been a sysadmin for a couple of ISP's and somehow survived the .com crash, and am currently a business analyst for a big company.
I do some work with user interaction, design, and a limited amount of graphic design.

I have enjoyed the benefits of open source / free software for so long, and always wished that I could contribute back, but
I cannot do much with code (apart from some non compiled languages).

Since I want to do more in the way of graphic design, and just design in general, I thought this would be a great way where I can
learn from others, grow my skills, and contribute back to a broad community that I have benefited from for so many years.

-Chad

A Book on Icon Design

Hi Everyone,
I contacted this list a few months ago looking for someone to interview for my book on icons. Thank-you for the help. I thought I would let you know that I've finally finished writing (270+ pages!) and my book is now available from Rockable Press :)

It all began when I wrote a history of icon design and left out much of the free and open-source projects which I didn't know much about at the time. After reading many requests to make an updated version, I decided to include a comprehensive history of desktop icons as the basis of my book.

I also interviewed Jakub Steiner about the Tango Desktop Project, and included information on KDE, GNOME and Ubuntu and discussed the rendering style of the icons and the evolution of the styles (including some history).

The book takes a common sense approach to teaching the theory and techniques of icon design and doesn't lean too heavily on particular software or methods (my thought is, you can draw with whatever you like, as long as it looks good) but it is packed with helpful tips and tricks for taming stray pixels and working with multiple sizes and formats and lessons about drawing in perspective and applying light and different styles (desktop, toolbar, etc.)

Anyway, if you're interested I hope you check it out and enjoy it and thank-you for the helpful connections and advice when I first started :)

Just joined

Just joined. Been an exclusive kubuntu user on the desktop/laptop since
Dapper. A huge fan of canonical and the efforts they've put into spreading
linux. Anyway, my platform preference for tablet/phone has been webos. I'm
sure the platform will be slaughtered due to mismanagement and I've been
lementing how I have no real option otherwise. I hate iOS and not a big fan
of android (to say nothing of blackberry). When Mark announced that ubuntu
was going to move into the tablet/phone/tv market, I got superexcited
because its a natural move. Also, it would tie together my other digital
uses. I'd love to have ubuntu on my touchpad.

I'd like to assist with the art side of things. I've done a bit of coding in
the past, but I'm more fluid with graphics than anything. The last few days,
I've been reading up on canonical standards and such but there's still
plenty for me to read.

My graphics experience is pretty limited to inkscape. It was the app I used
to design a coat of arms for a guild I joined in a MMO. I needed to learn
how to use inkscape, so the project made sense as a learning tool. I'm self
taught.

I desire to give back to the community (after so many years of being a user)
and would be honored to contribute.

A link to the coat of arms:

Please keep in mind that it was my first creative work.
