x2go desktop sharing under Ubuntu

Hi x2go users and devs!

I installed x2go server under Ubuntu 12.04 from the x2go ppa. The server is
running KDE and I'm hoping to share just one users KDE desktop with various
clients (at least 1) although I have only tried logging in from Windows 7 so far
and I always get a new desktop instead of being presented to option of or
automatically getting logged onto the already running desktop.

I asked about this in IRC and I was told that x2godesktopsharing need not be
installed on the server to achieve what I want as I thought that would be the
way to do this initially. Instead I was told I needed to suspend my session but
I'm not sure how that process is supposed to work. I installed the KDE x2go
plasmoid but that only seems to be able to suspend desktops that have logged in
remotely- the suspend option is greyed out for user logged in locally. The user
I'm trying to desktop share with is added to both of the x2go groups.

Is this known to work as I want currently? If so, are there any relevant guides
or docs?

Your BTS does not cooperate with Comcast

I use Comcast which happens to be the US's largest ISP. I have to use them for
SMTP delivery (as they block the outgoing port).

But sending mail from me to you BTS fails for your greylisting, and Comcast
being Comcast goes into _abort_ rather than _retry_.

PyHoca-GUI 0.4.0.1 created bad config file

Hi all,

x2go is quite nice to connect from Windoze to a few Ubuntu machines at work,
and I am very glad that you guys carry on from the various Nx projects

In order to permit multiple machine entries, I fiddled with PyHoca (0.4.0.1),
but seem to have corrupted the file by adding multiple entries with the same
key.

Now I am getting:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "pyhoca\wxgui\frontend.pyo", line 1064, in OnProfileEdit
File "pyhoca\wxgui\profilemanager.pyo", line 137, in __init__
  File "x2go\backends\profiles\_file.pyo", line 329, in to_profile_id
x2go.x2go_exceptions.X2GoProfileException: The sessions config file contains
multiple session profiles with name: foo123
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "pyhoca\wxgui\frontend.pyo", line 1147, in OnProfileExport

Where (on a win7 machine) is that file, and how can I clean it manually?

Many thanks, Dirk

Debugging tips?

I'm just starting to use x2go, and it has mostly worked great.   But, I have run into problems where I connect to my server, get authenticated, but never get my application displayed.    I can see the x2goagent process running on the server, but the app never displays.   Creating a new user account and logging in with that has usually succeeded as a workaround.   But, obviously that's not a solution.

I'm sure there is a simple fix for this, like cleaning up some lost session data.  But, my attempts thus far have failed.    Are there any session debugging tips available?  Or, pointers for where to look or how to enable more debugging output?

Unity and LXDE with x2go - a quick test

I ran some tests from Windows and Ubuntu trying to start Unity and
LXDE sessions on Ubuntu 12.04. The findings:
- LXDE and x2go work OK.
- Unity is IMO close to unusable with x2go.

Setup:
Ubuntu 12.04 with x2goclient 4.0.0.4, x2goserver 4.0.0.0-0~640~precise1
Windows 7 with x2goclient 4.0.0.3.

Unity
Open (Linux/Windows): The window is resized to fullscreen during
session startup, completely ignoring whatever resolution I might have
chosen in the settings.
Resize(Linux/Windows): Resizing the Unity window does not work, e.g.
the window size changes but the content "does not get it".

LXDE
Open (Linux): Works correctly.
Open (Windows): The client window is too small for the content. Presumably [0].
Resize (Linux/Windows): When resizing the client window, the taskbar
is "forgotten". It just stays where it is while the rest is resized. I
can trigger the taskbars resize reliably when I open a new window or
move the mouse over buttons on the taskbar that change their
appearance on mouseover.

Disable x2goclient audio support? (bluetooth headset trouble)

I use a bluetooth headset for music and voip. When I start x2goclient
on Windows 7, it forces the headset into a low-quality profile (no
session is open, just the client). This is expected to happen if an
application wants to use the microphone. I presume x2go opens audio
sources and sinks in order to forward them to a client later and so
Windows thinks it needs to switch to another profile. When I close
x2goclient again, the headset switches back to the high quality
profile.

I can disable the headsets microphone manually inside the windows
audio settings. But then, of course, I can no longer use the
microphone for voip.

It would be nice to have some kind of switch to disable x2gos audio
support completely (or to be able to select which devices are
forwarded).

As a workaround, it seems to work if I just rename pulseaudio.exe to
something else.

Thanks!

Silly question on my part but is there any chance the composer window is
appearing under another window, perhaps the mail KMail window? - John

exotic multi-display / multi-monitor configuration

Hi everyone,

is it possible to restrict a x2go session to a certain amount of moitors / displays?

Usage: I got 4 monitors connected to to my developer machine. The goal is to use 3 monitors for one x2go
session and 1 monitor for the local machine.

Thanks for your help!

Thomas

KMail composer window doesn't appear with NX

Dear all,

This message concerns a longtanding bug bothering KDE users. Most likely
the bug is with KDE and not NX, but perhaps someone here can help us find
out exactly what's causing the problem.

First, a description of how things normally work with KDE's e-mail client,
KMail: If one invokes the "New Message", "Forward", or "Reply" command on
a message, a composer window opens. You can then type your message and
send it, at which point the composer window closes. If you close KMail
while one or more composer windows are still open, then the next time you
launch KMail, those composer windows are restored so you can resume writing
the messages where you left off.

The problem is that if you launch KMail from an NX session, the composer
window usually doesn't appear when you invoke the "Forward" or "Reply"
commands. I think the composer windows must be created, but for some
reason they are not immediately visible, because if you quit and relaunch
KMail (still over NX), the composer windows you created last time suddenly
appear.

The problem happens usually but not always. (That is, sometimes when you
launch KMail, the Forward and Reply commands will work for a time, but then
they'll stop working, and will never work again for that session.) The
problem also never happens with the "New message" command, even though to
all outward appearances the same sort of composer window is being launched.

So far I've reproduced the problem with both NoMachine NX and x2go.

Anyone have any idea where the problem might lie? Is there some sort of
fine-grained debug logging I can enable in x2go which prints a message
every time it tries to display a new window?

Regards,
Tristan

encrypting home & printing problem

Hi All:

We're experimenting with using X2go and  encrypting /home with Encfs and so far everything works well except printing.  We think this is because x2go printing relies on creating a link from the spool inside of the .x2go sub folder "C-User-50-xxxxxxxx.stDGNOME_dp32 to the /tmp area, and the Encfs encryption moves things and breaks the link.

Our testing indicates that if we don't encrypt a user's /home we can print, but can't print if we encrypt another user's /home all on the same server.

FYI:  We're not using a central x2go printing server solution (we had concerns about security, so are taking the performance hit instead).

We're using ssh to connect, and have gotten this to work by moving the ssh key outside of the encrypted area and creating a symlink to .ssh inside the area.

Q:  Would some sort of symlink work for printing?   The issue here is that (and we may be wrong) the name of the "C-User50...." folder seems to change periodically.  Would we need some sort of login script to figures out what the newest "C-user" folder is and creates a symlink on the fly to the spool device?

As usual, any help appreciated!
