Various display issues after Lucid -> Natty upgrade

I have a pretty heterogeneous environment. After upgrading from Lucid
to Natty (required for one of the clients), I see a number of display
issues. If these are covered in the Natty release notes, I don't know
enough to be able to tell it. It might be worth saying that I only
upgraded to Natty because Lucid doesn't have a driver capable of fully
booting the z210's on-board NIC. But, because of that, I can't really
downgrade.

Could this be due to upgrading rather than doing a fresh install?
Could I have done one of those special "only true users can manage
this" things? I can give more machine details if that will help.
These are all in "Classic" mode. The server is AMD Opteron 8384
(amd64).

Key to behaviors indicated below:

** No Boot: Doesn't make it to login screen

** Elements Vertical Mirror: Machine boots, shows login correctly,
logs user in, starts X, the X display is arranged properly, but
individual text and image elements are mirrored vertically.

** No User X: Machine boots, shows the login screen, tries to log the
user in, but can't start X and returns the user to the login prompt.

** Die on Xterm: Boots, logs in, X starts right, but try to run
"xterm" from within a gnome-terminal and the screen freezes and you
get booted back to the login screen. Generally, the client must be
restarted to get proper X behavior on subsequent logins. We aren't
really so concerned with being able to start an xterm: some of our

I haven't read the rest of your mail, but I'm guessing that installing
the linux-image-generic-lts-backport-natty package, available in the
lucid repositories, would solve your problem without needing to upgrade.

Re: Various display issues after Lucid -> Natty upgrade

I'll give that a try. I can't mess with the server a lot because of
the users. But, I think I can manage to try this.

In the end, though, these issues probably need to be addressed (unless
they're due to some magic stupidity on my part... :-).

Re: Various display issues after Lucid -> Natty upgrade

I know this is a really basic question, and based on your detailed
response I'm sure you covered this.. but you *did* start fresh with a
new chroot after you upgraded, no?

Re: Various display issues after Lucid -> Natty upgrade

I think you mean to ask if I built a new image after upgrade? Oh yes,
I did. But it is very lucky that I did not get rid of the old images
(pre-upgrade) because in certain cases, those are the only ones that
work. The brand new, new chroot, etc., images give trouble.

In fact, that is the issue: The fresh chroot images behave worse than
the old ones I saved. I'm confused by this.

How to set default session for ldm?

Hello,

I cannot find any way of specifying the default session that ldm will
start upon login: Users **always** get a unity session, unless they
chose different from the menu **every single time they log in**.
Neither is their choice remembered next time, nor does any of the
options work that a have found via google:

- User's ~/.ldm **is not honored** (see Launchpad bug #842254)
- Setting "LDM_SESSION" in lts.conf (as suggested in bug #770323) **is
not honored**
- Setting "LDM_GLOBAL_DMRC=/etc/ltsp/ldm-global-dmrc" in lts.conf and
creating this file (as suggested here:
http://rudd-o.com/en/linux-and-free-software/arcana-of-etc-ltsp-ldm-global-dmrc)
**is not honored**

I have filed a bug on Launchpad (#842261), but perhaps there is some
secret way of doing it that I have not discovered?

Thank you, help is much appreciated,
Regards,
Rüdiger

Re: How to set default session for ldm?

Hello Rüdiger,

on ubuntu-10.04 with ltsp-xxx-5.x it works fine for me.
You need to setup on ltsp-server "/var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/lts.conf"
with something like:

---------------------------------------
[default]
  LDM_SESSION="/usr/bin/startkde"

[00:19:66:cf:0d:11]
  LDM_SESSION=""

[00:23:8b:ed:51:12]
  LDM_SESSION="/usr/bin/gnome-session"
--------------------------------------

best regards,
rainer

Re: How to set default session for ldm?

Hello ainer,

thank you for your answer. I need to be more specific:
My problem is about selecting the Gnome session (profile) for
/usr/bin/gnome-session:

I put the following in lts.conf:
---------------------------------------
[default]
LDM_SESSION="gnome-session --session=classic-gnome"
---------------------------------------

and expect the user to get a classic gnome session (not unity) by
default. But the "--session" parameter is not honored, users always
get a unity Gnome session by default.

This is on natty.

Thanks again for help,
regards,
Rüdger

You missed an "X":
LDM_XSESSION="gnome-session --session=classic-gnome"
