Ubuntu's policy is to never introduce new features or new versions after
a release.
As the asked change is to introduce localapps support (if I remember the
thread well) it's not an option.

Backporting Intrepid's ltsp to Hardy may be an option but it's not as
easy as backporting a single package, you'd have to backport at least 3
source packages, then make sure they work well with what's in Hardy
(like the old openssh, ...)

What will probably happen for hardy (if someone has the time, I'm not
sure I personally will) is to cherry-pick the bug fixes from Intrepid
and Jaunty and apply them on the Hardy code. Though, that will require
quite an amount of job as a lot changed upstream recently and some of
these fixes may be a lot bigger than what we can send as a SRU.

presentation slowness

i have 60% CPU usage on the server when clients are swithced on but not
working... it's an AMD Sempron 2800+ 1600 MHz with 1438 MB RAM.

i've noticed some processes remain working even after user logout (and
some of them uses 100% of CPU). i installed gnome-watchdog to kill these
processes, but not all unused processes are killed...

any suggestion?

thanks

Re: presentation slowness

Dump Gnome and KDE.  Both are hogs.  Gnome watchdog is not gonna kill any gnome hogs, just others.

I suggest you to try a server with better L2 cache size (>= 1MB).

one user can't log in - LTSP 5 on Debian Lenny

I have one user who can log in at the server, but not at a thin client.
/var/log/auth shows that his password was accepted. Upon login, the
LDM screen goes away and the screen turns black, then LDM comes up
again. Other users can log in at this same thin client.

What should I check for? Is something in the Gnome session killing the
connection? I was going to try changing to fvwm-crystal instead of
Gnome, but LDM didn't offer me that option (even though I can do it on
the server).

Is it possible that the user's screen resolution settings are causing
this? It's set to 1280x1024, but I didn't verify that the thin client
(an old P3) can handle that.

If they've hard-set this though the gnome "Screen Resolution" preference, then
yes, this can lock you out. I beleive:

gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /desktop/gnome/screen

as that user will clear their settings, and allow auto-detect to work.

Re: presentation slowness

Gnome and KDE are hogs compared to a WM/DE like Fluxbox or WindowMaker
in the same respect that Firefox is a hog compared to Lynx. There is a
balance to be met here, and throwing the baby out with the bathwater
doesn't seem like a very good suggestion to me.

Quark, are you able to 'kill' these offending processes manually, or are
they zombies? Can you take a look in /var/log to see what gnome-watchdog
IS killing (if it's installed correctly and functioning, you'll see lots
of messages from it)? What processes, specifically, are you talking about?

Cheers,
Jordan/Lns
