Andreas,

If I didn't want to wait for Milestone 5, what would you recommend
would be simplest to trial M4?

Download M3 and do a zypper dup?
Or, download sources?

I assume from what I've been reading the main thing missing from M4 is
mostly documentation, the actual code objectives for M4 has been
largely met.

zypper dup will get you to the current version - which today is milestone 5.

why should somebody not yet openSUSE related spend money to come at 
OSC? (I mean non Nurnberg people, eventually non german)?

For us it's appealing to meet friends, but for the others?

Next: is there something planned to make the *after* OSC press 
release? last OSC day? start of marketting hack feast?
