Specification are in Dutch but readily understandable. Can anybody
give me clue of the quality of this ;laptop and if I will have any
problems with the latest Slackware as I am not planning to stay with

PDF Viewers

I've used xpdf to read pdf files for more than a dozen years. It does a
great job ... as long as the pdf was not generated by the latest Adobe on
Microsoft. For some reason, xpdf seems to be behind the curve of currency.
While I have acroread-7 for linux installed I don't find it as easy to use
as xpdf because it's more mouse/trackball dependent than keyboard friendly.

On the slackbuilds.org Web site I see a bunch of pdf viewers available. Is
anyone here using any of these and can provide recommendations for one over
the others?

Strange... I have never had any problem with xpdf.

I prefer using xpdf, since it is much easier to user (and
lightweight) than most alternatives.

Why build something, when you can try Okular ?

It's in my version of Slackware (13.0) and works very well.
It can also open other types of files, such as .chm, which
is a big plus in my opinion.

I'll stick to xpdf, but feel free to try Okular before you
start compiling other programs.

Hope this helps!

Gil,

   Here's a typical problem (on -13.1):

[rshepard <at> salmo ~/spatial-data/Nevada/land_status]$ xpdf
landstatus_metadata_20100820.pdf
Error: PDF version 1.6 -- xpdf supports version 1.5 (continuing anyway)
Error (0): PDF file is damaged - attempting to reconstruct xref table...
Error: Couldn't find trailer dictionary
Error: Couldn't read xref table

If this can be resolved with a configuration change to xpdf I'll do that.

Yeah, I really like xpdf but it won't display version 1.6 files here.

I don't have an Okular here.

Re: PDF Viewers

Well, you can use Evince, it comes with Gnome.
Foxit-Reader[1] for linux it´s very easy to use.
ePDFview it´s another lightweight pdf viewer, based on poppler libs.
Gpdf[2], it has basic PDF viewing capabilities but not many features.
Kpdf and Okular, for KDE desktop.

And here[3] is a comparison, and some other[4] stuff.

I hope this help you :D.

Best regards.

Ah, that explains it. No KDE or Gnome here. We use only Xfce.

Guess I'll build and try the variety on slackbuilds.org and see what
backup to xpdf will handle pdf version 1.6 files.

Thanks,

Rich

Re: PDF Viewers

This is not a problem, I´am using xfce too, and I have installed Evince,
and ePDFview, last one installed about 5 minutes ago. I tested with a
50Mb pdf file and seems pretty decent to me, all options, rendering and
loading cpu/time...

Best regards...

Re: PDF Viewers

Any particular reason not to use the Adobe Reader? The only issue with
it that I have encountered is the fact it is a proprietary
application.
