Subject: [slackware] Slackware search plugins for Firefox

I made a couple of search plugins for Firefox for searching the
Slackware packages. In case they would be useful to others:
http://syntaktisk.dk/files/slack12_1.xml for 12.1 packages and
http://syntaktisk.dk/files/slackcurrent.xml for -current packages.
Simply copy them to $FIREFOX/searchplugins - which for me
is /usr/lib/firefox-2.0.0.17/searchplugins.

Yours,
Morten

Skype or?

I installed Slackware 12.1 on a Novatech laptop for my daughter. She
receives phone calls via Skype, and is of the opinion that in order to
save money she would like to make phone calls via Skype.

My question is, is Skype the best solution? Is there a free software
alternative?

Skype is free software, there is an alternative called Gizmo that provides
extras like instant messaging with AIM, Yahoo and MSN.

Look at SIP clients as an open source alternative, but they require a SIP
provider to connect to.

SIP Center provides a list of possible providers:

Neither Skype nor Gizmo are _free_ software; they're merely software
you don't have to swap money for.

Thank you for that, I did intend Open source as opposed to 'Free', but I
doubt that my daughter is that bothered by the philosophy as long as the
calls are cheaper.

Re: Skype or?

Doesn't KDE come with a SIP client?

If not, or if you're as KDE-allergic as I am, then for FSF-kosher VoIP
I'd recommend linphone. It compiled and works nicely on Slackware
12.0, with minimal dependencies (everything else I tried either sulked
with me or demanded half a million support libraries), and its GUI,
whilst no oil painting, does get the job done. (I prefer the command
line client, but I'm odd.)

As for SIP providers, I'd recommend sipgate.co.uk - not least because
they offer a UK geographical phone number (or a US one, I believe, or
some other countries) for incoming calls, for no money. (And as far as
I can tell, at no detriment to the service quality.) I don't know if
they're the only people who offer that, but only because I kind of
stopped looking after I found them...

Hope this is of some use,

I'm using linphone as well.

On KDE I noticed (alsa) sound troubles in combo with artsd, so I
stopped using artsd completely. (people could hear my voice perfectly
but not vice versa)

That's the main reason I'm using sipgate. I don't have a landline and
usually don't hand out my mobile phone number to companies. And if
I'm not logged in to sipgate, the call is recorded and forwarded via
email.

Quick question here - not Slackware, but because I know that you people
are bound to know and have always been helpful:
