lpr: error - scheduler not responding

I am running Slackware 10 and recently did some security upgrades. I
had been on the security list and somehow didn't get the info; so this
may be an old upgrade. One of the items is lprng-3.8.27-i486-1. So my
first guess is that this has something to do with the problem.

I ran /etc/rc.d/rc.lprng restart and it said that it started the daemon.

Another change is that I am using KDE, but I don't see what that would
have to do with trying to run 'lpr' from an xterm. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Anita

I decided to try to reinstall that lprng pkg. I went looking for it on
the cdrom I had made and did not find it (libpng was the similar name I
had recalled) Then I noticed that cups was on that cd. I had installed
cups which wiped out lprng. So I uninstalled cups and got my Slackware
installation cdrom out and installed lprng which was gone after
uninstalling cups for some reason. Not sure what happened there.

After the reinstall, I had to get the spool back and the easiest way for
me was to just rerun apsfilter's configuration, use what was there which
was my default stuff already in printcap, Install it which made the
spool, and quit. Now the printer is working again.

dvb tv cards

I'm thinking of treating myself to some digital tv in the new year and was
wondering if anyone on the list has had success with any particular dvb tv
card.

TIA

I'm not answering the question exactly but I've
recently put together a box with Slack 10, running the
2.4.26 kernel, a Hauppage PVR 350 tv card and MythTv.
I'm hoping to add a digital card next year and I'm
considering going for either a Hauppage Nova-t or
Dec2000 as it should work quite well with the PVR.

It's all very much a work in progress but I am pleased
with the results and performance so far.

Steve

AFAIK the *old* Nova-T work, while the new are a hassle.

That's one way of putting it - I bought a Nova-T the other day... the
2.6.10-rc2
kernel appears to support it, but is unstable. 2.6.10-rc3 won't compile on the
other hand... I'm hoping it will work when 2.6.10 is released.

don't count on it, I'd give it a few more stable kernel releases...
experience shows that such things inch towards usability.

I'm stuck here with 2.6.7 with several patches on different setups,
and I know how long it can take to get a system both running smoothly
and full hardware support:

My desktop system is an epia-m which needs a patch for integrated
graphics, last patch available for kernel 2.6.7

One of my USB hubs is supported since 2.6.6

External USB/IDE devices with genesys logic chipset are supported
since 2.6.9, but have run smoothly on my system since 2.6.pre thanks
to some weird no-name USB hub.

ACPI on my laptop ...

you get the picture :)

I'm curious why you stick with lprng and not use cups. Recently I set
up a Slack system for my father (also using KDE) and with cups the
printer installation went smoothly, no probs whatsoever
