Fonts

I may have found at least a small clue in what is going wrong. the problem
is I don't understand what it isI reinstalled without any legacies from
the previous install and got the following error in /etc/fonts

XML parsing error

fatal parsing error: the document is not in the correct file format in line
20, column 111
--><!-- Font directory list configured on Tue Sep 16 15:18:17 PDT 2003 -->
<dir>/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1</dir>
                                                   ^

However another clean install gives the same error, except the error is in
...line 26 column 23.

I've had a look in my 9 system and it gives me the following:
XML parsing error

fatal parsing error: the document is not in the correct file format in line
23, column 31
	<dir>/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts</dir>

The fonts however seem to work OK in 9 however.

Can anyone diagnose this for me please? ^

Fonts and other problems solved

Can I thank all who made helpful suggestions, especially Mamading Ceesay, I
think, having had other problems with Knode crashing repeatedly, that I
have finally solved matters. I have removed KDE 3.1.4 from 9.1 and
replaced it with 3.1 from Slackware 9. Now everything works as it should
fonts have reappeared and knode works.

My son-in-law has been trying to reproduce the fault but, having much more
powerful and up-to-date equipment could'nt. Between us we can only
conclude that my SiS 6326 card was in some kind of conflict with KDE
3.1.4, or perhaps having only 8m of memory wasn't up to the job.

Slackware on Cobalt Qube 3

Hi,

I'm currently thinking about trying to lay my hands on a used/refurbished Sun Cobalt Qube 3, installing the
latest version of Slackware on it and using it as a broadband home gateway/server

I was wondering, if anybody on the list has installed Slack on a Qube 3 (any interesting quirks/details) and
also if anybody knows where I can lay my hands on a cheap used Qube 3 (preferably of the Plus spec - Standard or Business)?

I saw someone looking for a home for a Qube 3 in uk.comp.os.linux very
recently:

Message-ID: <6474812.BffPKadDX5 <at> callisto>

The author of that post is also a Slackware user, and one of the
maintainers of splack.

I saw that thread on Saturday, that's what kicked off my current train of thought. I followed up on that same
day and found out that the Qube that Chris is selling isn't a Plus-spec (which has a faster CPU, more RAM and a
bigger hard disk).

Slackware security configuration tool

Hi all,

Came across SAStk (Slackware Administrator Security Tool Kit) today,
version 0.1.3.1.

It seems this version is only for 8.0 and probably won't run on 9.1.

Any suggestions, news on SAStk, or on something similar regarding
security tools for Slack 9.1?

Thanks,

Paul Jahshan

Slack*more <http://freshmeat.net/projects/slackmore> contains scripts for hardening your system.

I've used it myself on 9.0, what I liked about it was that it was easy to audit and extend, also it was quite
configurable so you can turn options on/off according to your own judgment.

When I get round to installing 9.1, I'll update my extensions and contribute them back to the developer.

Step-by-step Securing Slackware 9.1

Hi all,

Is there a checklist for securing 9.1?

Anything simple (easy step-by-step procedures with easy explanations)
yet complete?

I have found either too simplistic lists or too technical ones. Anything
in-between?

Thanks,

Paul Jahshan

It would have been helpful, if you had listed what resources you had looked at and discounted. In lieu of that
may I suggest the following:-

Draft security chapter from the revised slackbook project probably falls into the simplistic category.
<http://slackbook.yoshiwara.org.uk/security.html>

Jack Lai's Slackware Tips and Tricks <http://members.cox.net/laitcg/new/intro.html> has sections on
Securing Slackware, Firewall and Security Monitoring is a bit closer to what you are looking for and has
links to further docs.

Did you look at the Slack*more link, I provided earlier? As I said, it was pretty decent when I last looked at
it and there have been 3 releases since!

Security on 9.1

Thanks, Mamading,

I tried SlackMore and I found it rather difficult for my Linux level. I
probably need some introductory readings on the subject before I really
know what I'm doing!

Yes, the SlackBook project was fine, and in fact I had downloaded it
earlier, but didn't remember the chapter on security!

Cheers,
Paul
