CRITICAL ISSUE: libc.so.6 lost in slackpkg upgrade-all

Sony Vaio running stock 14.0/x86_64. After running 'slackpkg update' I ran
'slackpkg upgrade-all' and the screen went crazy with text scrolling by too
rapidly to read. This behavior is because libc.so.6 somehow was lost(!) and
everything depends on its presence ... including mount to try to restore
that package from the distribution DVD. Never in the 15 years I've run linux
has this happened to me. I'm well beyond my experience base and knowledge of
how to proceed.

I've no idea what might have happened or why but do need to learn what I
need to do to restore the system to full working condition.

Advice and recommendations needed,

Rich

URL for downloading 14.0 multilib files?

   I need AlienBob's multilib/compat32 libraries for 14.0/x86_64. I tried
using curl to download all the files as a batch process but
http://connie.slackware.org/~alien/multilib/14.0/ is not accepted as a valid
server address.

What is the appropriate command to get all the files downloaded without my
having to sit here and get them one at a time?

TIA,

Rich

Problems to anticipate on compiling 3.7.1 or 3.8.rc kernel?

I am doing some experiments with framebuffer console graphics, for the time being
just accessing memory mapped fb, but I anticipate writing a special module to do
some kernel things too, so I will be recompiling the kernel (64bit, BTW).

I have Slackware 14.0 x86_64 with the 3.2.29 kernel, so I am wondering if there are
known problems with jumping ahead and compiling and running e,g,

	http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v3.x/linux-3.7.1.tar.bz2

in the 14.0 installed environment of tools and libraries etc.

I am using AMD graphics outputting via HDMI cable to a TV as a monitor (full 1920x1080)
and would like to get sound as well via HDMI, but that can wait, although it would be
a nice side benefit if 3.7.1 supports it. Anyone here have HDMI sound going?

TIA.

Best wishes...

To everyone. I hope the Holidays are pleasant and fun. I hope Santa and the New
Year is good especially to everyone involved in keeping Slackware going.

Need a Folding At Home 7 installer

I just installed Slackware 14 on a older box (Celeron 1GHz) but when I
went to get the Folding at Home installer, all they have now are Debian
and Red Hat specific installs. Anyone know where I can find a FAH 7
installer for Slackware?

Thank you,

Slackware and eudev project

Hi,

recently there was a eudev project announcement by Gentoo devs,
a fork of udev in response to systemd-udev integration:
http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.gentoo.devel/81901

Does Slackware indend to join and/or support the eudev project ?
Does Slackware intend to implement it in its distro ?

Upgrade from 13.37 to 14.0: Sound Lost

The Sony Vaio was upgraded from 13.37/x86_64 to 14.0/x86_64 and the only
capability lost is sound. 'which alsamixer' returns /usr/bin/alsamixer but
trying to run alsamixer in a virtual console returns 'no such file found.'
The sound icon on the Xfce4 panel is greyed out, too, and will not respond
to a right click.

I have not installed the latest multilib, 32-bit compatibility modules. Is
this the problem?

A clue stick will be very helpful. I'm now stymied but confident the
solution is something very simple that has not occurred to me.

cron directory temporaries

Hi Again,

Does anyone know why /var/spool/cron is full of temporary
directories, shouldn't crontab
remove them once it puts the new crontab in place?

cron.0nnc7N/ cron.8B2aUC/ cron.DQpQ2a/ cron.OCZcH6/ cron.W4dMdx/
cron.hz6xGv/ cron.vP6O9K/
cron.1GO7he/ cron.8b5o2U/ cron.DUMBHe/ cron.QDdO5F/ cron.aWLMXw/
cron.jdqviV/ cron.vddmmS/
cron.2vSGGX/ cron.AoUk2o/ cron.GmWOCm/ cron.RFEIP3/ cron.cRYUFe/
cron.ko2PY1/ cron.vtqoiY/
cron.6BUOO1/ cron.C4QbYY/ cron.GuKoU1/ cron.RepgN9/ cron.deMeGB/
cron.rhok8E/ cron.x71Bte/
cron.6R2YlJ/ cron.CGotPU/ cron.JLo8dt/ cron.SShuzQ/ cron.fixTw7/
cron.rnU9sm/ crontabs/

The directories are actually empty, and the only user on the server is
root, so surely it can't be a permissions issue

eg:

drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Jul 31 20:55 cron.AoUk2o/

Any suggestions muchly appreciated.

RC Scripts question

Hi,

Have a question for the "bash/sh" experts.

In the files like rc.M, in the "if" statements, some scripts have a
period then space, then called_script start/stop_parameter etc

Now, as I understand it, the period means run called_script with the
sh environment of rc.6.

Am I correct in assuming this means if I set the ulimit to 8192 for
rc.M that all called scripts will get a ulimit raise to 8192?

Also, conversely if I call, say, rc.httpd with a ulimit of 8192 will
that be honored or ignored?

Or, do I have the period (source???) all wrong (highly probably since
google is full of so much mis-information)?

Niki
