I strongly suspect this is due to a bug in the driver. You're at least
the 3rd person to report this, although I think we're all using
different Radeon cards. I'm using a 7000 and have seen this since
upgrading to 4.0.3-5 (which fixed the "primary screen blanks when you
click on the secondary screen" problem).

you need to add
 	Screen 0
to your first device section.

Announcing GinGin64: A Technology Preview for the AMD64 Platform

I'm announcing this here to widen the distribution, as many X
users may also be interested in XFree86 running on the AMD 64 bit
technology platform "AMD64".

If you encounter bugs with XFree86 running on AMD Opteron
hardware, please report them via bugzilla as instructed below,
and flag them as "x86_64" (the old name for AMD64). Be sure to
include complete details as to the type of system you're using,
what video hardware, and attach your X server log and config
file.

Also, since this hardware is brand new technology to the larger
general public, only a small subset of video hardware has been
tested on this platform in 64bit mode.

While only certain hardware is officially supported, I'd like to
encourage anyone interested in testing various video hardware
they've got laying around out, in order to get a better idea
what other hardware works and what hardware doesn't work at
all. In particular some of the older generations of hardware
out there which might be laying in a drawer, etc.

If you test any extra hardware out, please post a message here to
let us all know your results. Feel free to file bug reports in
bugzilla also if you like.

I'd basically like to know - for hardware I don't have
access too currently, which drivers work at all on the new
AMD64 platform, and which ones don't, so I can poke at them a bit
and also decide which drivers will officially ship in our future

"man radeon" and experiment with the options available for Radeon

OT: xfs vs. freetype

Hi all,

My system is currently configured to use RH xfs as a font server, and it
works ok. AFAIK 'freetype' X11 module would be an alternative to it. I
tried disabling xfs on /etc/X11/XF86Config, but fonts came up big and
ugly (I didn't go too deep in reconfiguring my stuff). So, my questions
are:

1. what's the relationship between xfs and freetype?

2. what's the relationship between freetype X11 module and Freetype
[http://freetype.sourceforge.net/] ?

3. What are the differences/advantages one offers compared to the other?

TIA

Andre

It won't make a difference. Mine has that and I still get mirrored
displays.

Re: XFree86-4.0.3-6 & 2nd Monitor

I suspect it may be a bug in the driver because based on the xfree86
log that was sent to the list, I never saw the second instance of the
radeon driver start (i.e., radeon(0) is there, but not radeon(1)). It
doesn't look like the shared entity code path is even being taken. My
guess, without looking at the code, is that the check for dualhead,
might be missing your chipset, or perhaps the logic got screwed up at
some point. Dualhead seems to work fine on my m6 based laptop, but
then again I'm using a semi-custom compiled radeon driver based on
4.3.0. something might have gotten broken in the recent redhat code
updates. I'd check the logic in the redhat version of RadeonPreInit()
and RadeonProbe(). I'll try and check them myself, maybe tomorrow...

Re: Help

this isn't really the appropriate list for general linux questions.
this list is for discussion of xfree86 related issues. but FWIW, the
newer versions of the distros (such as redhat 8 or 9) are very easy to
install and use. check out http://www.linuxdoc.org for some good
howtos. Search google for what you are trying to do, and I'm sure
someone has done it before you and documented it. all you need is a
linux distro and a server to run it on.

It is called "clone mode", which intentionally displays the same
image on both displays.
