Production?

I know the sense of many folks using Fedora is that it isn't appropriate
for production systems -- but despite this, I've used it in production
servers since FC1, and I'm not displeased with the results.

Does anyone else use Fedora on production servers?

RPMs to make server life easier

Fedora Server Folks,
I'm not sure this is the correct forum for this but I think my goals match the Fedora Server SIG goals fairly well.  I've been a member of the list server for a while now but it's not very busy.  Anyway let's get down to business.

My goal is 100% RPM install for applications.  My company is mostly there but there are a few issues that are caused by the distribution that's why I'm here.

Internal yum repo.  We use an internal yum repo so that all of our server don't have to go out to the internet BUT the fedora-release RPM is causing issues.
    1) /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora*.repo files cannot be removed or better yet never installed.
    2) /etc/yum.repos.d is provided by fedora-release instead of filesystem or yum itself.

chrony - It looks like I'm going to like chrony better than ntp BUT.
    1) I'd like a way to specify our internal servers in a /etc/chrony.d/ like configurations instead of editing /etc/chrony.conf

httpd-on, couchdb-on, etc...
    1) doesn't every body need these too?  Why can't this just be part of Fedora?

oracle-instantclient11.2-basic
    1) Can we get the wrapper stuff from spacewalk as part of some Fedora-But repo.

I await your comments.

Thanks,
Mike

Puppet more recent version

Hello,

What's the roadmap for Puppet more recent version to be part of Fedora?

Current puppet version is 0.25.5 which is 1,5 year old.
Same thing for EPEL.
Puppet version jumped to 2.6 after 0.25.5 and is now 2.7.
Whatever the latter change meant for the distrib in terms of dependencies, I haven't found anything
relevant in discussion groups/bugzilla.

Server Overview Page (the update)

Hi again,

as time goes by i just wanne update everyone to the new page design.

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SIGs/Server/ServersOverview_alpha

is now at working on as (i think)  Dan and myself are satisfied with the
design.
As an addon there will be be Subpages to every category like

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SIGs/Server/Databases

linked as "read more" which should give more detail information about
the package. Also this filling this pagesare now working on.

Filling in information will take some time, hoping we can start after
christmas with replacing the old side.

Best wishes

Joerg

My Introduction & some ideas

Hello all,

my Name is Joerg Stephan and work as a Sysadmin at an Research Facility
in Germany. I'am using Linux since RedHat 5.1 after a virus crashed my
"other" OS. Maybe because of my work i'am interested in server systems,
so i thought it could be a good idea to join the ServerSIG.
On IRC you can find me in the #fedora-server channel as johe or johe|
work (depends on where i'am :-).

So had a short conversation with sharkcz (Don i think) and he replaced
the Server_overview side so i could add packages to it. While taking a
look at the side i thought it would be a nice idea to change the
information on it a bit.

Cause this seems to be a team sport i just made a side

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SIGs/Server/ServersOverview_alpha

to have a discussion on this issue. Maybe on this side there could be
spread a bit more information. Installing instructions, known and not
fixed bugs could be refered on this side.

I'am currently settle up an virtual server at my home, so it should no
problem installing a fedora server and so updating the versions
displayed on the side.

So let the discussion begin :-)

regards

Jörg

pure server packages

Hi,

I am slowly creating a list of server packages (or application) that can
be installed without any interference with desktop libraries or other
stuff. The procedure is simple - run "yum install <foo>" in a minimal
installation and see what happens :-) Theoretical way would be to check
the dependency graphs for packages, but own experience is more
interesting.

URL for the list is

Common groups for web data

I often see problems like in bug#507406 [1] because I run lighttpd on some
servers. Like the report says, having a separate group for web servers like
'www' or 'www-data' like debian does would go a long way for commonly
installed packages.

How do others feel about this? Should we shoot for a feature for F13? What
kind of problems are we going to run into with changing the group in all the
web packages? What can we do to help people with the upgrade?

Is this a case for recommending the AOS spin, and then adding
packages from there ?

The AOS (The Appliance Operating System) is a scaled down version of
Fedora
with a small footprint containing only the packages necessary to run

Fedora server

I use a 500 MHz 4GB HDD system to run Fedora 11.
I want to use it as a router, web server and php, c++, mysql development environment, console only. I do not
need printers, graphics, electronics design, dial-up support on it. I use vim, ssh, samba, iptables,
NetworkManager for initial config. I would stop using mail server. These are the groups currently
installed:

   Administration Tools
   Authoring and Publishing
   Base
   Development Libraries
   Development Tools
   Dial-up Networking Support
   Electronic Lab
   Fonts
   Graphics
   Hardware Support
   Input Methods
   Legacy Fonts
   Mail Server
   MySQL Database
   Network Servers
   Printing Support
   Server Configuration Tools
   System Tools
   Text-based Internet
   Web Server
   Windows File Server

The problem is that they eat up 90% of my only working partition, that is, almost 3GB. Can you please suggest a
way I can free a few hundreds of MB on HDD? The problem is that, every time I try to remove the most useless
group, I lose basic functionality, like NetworkManger or samba client. I hope that maybe you could
suggest a solution to render my system usable for the next months, updates and some reasonably small c++
programming included.

Thank you in advance.
