If it is of interest your SendProfile script did not dedect my sound
card which is a Crystal Semiconductor CS4236 sound card. That was not
surprising since lspci does not detect it either.

Should be the "e100" driver. According to the source code:

 *      I.   General
 *
 * The driver supports Intel(R) 10/100 Mbps PCI Fast Ethernet
 *      controller family, which includes the 82557, 82558, 82559,
 *      82550, 82551, and 82562 devices.  82558 and greater controllers
 * integrate the Intel 82555 PHY. The controllers are used in
 * server and client network interface cards, as well as in
 * LAN-On-Motherboard (LOM), CardBus, MiniPCI, and ICHx
 *      configurations.  8255x supports a 32-bit linear addressing
 * mode and operates at 33Mhz PCI clock rate.

So verify that the "e100" driver is loaded via "/sbin/lsmod".

I installed/ran smolt but I don't run HAL. It almost sorta kinda worked :(

Yea, I had a similar experience with a webcam that I bought several
years ago, so I just used it on a Windows box. But I'm trying to never
boot to the dark side of my hard drive anymore. I can't seem to find
that old webcam, so I'd like to buy a new one. I was hoping it was a
little easier to buy one in 2007 with a little bit of confidence that it
would
actually work under Linux. But the responses so far seem to
indicate that the webcam development is still mostly done outside of
what's shipped with most Linux distributions.? I guess I'll just by one
that has the same name as one that was listed in one of the
responses and return it if it doesn't work.

digitalfaq.com is handy site! Thanks for the link.

Or as a normal user -

startx

Then you don't have to switch run levels - which you probably don't want
to do on a server (except to switch to run level 1 for maintenance, but
that usually done rarely and only in emergency - and often done by
rebooting the machine into run level 1)

When you use startx - logging out of your desktop/window manager returns
you to the cli.

[oops, sorry. I always like reading the answers on top, but if that's
not normal, I'll do it this way]

The only thing I thought of is some problem with my CD reader/burner.
I did the SHA1 computation on the FILE that I used to burn the CD, not
the CD itself. I guess I'll try the CD itself, if that's possible.
Otherwise, I'll take and ISO image of the CD and compare the resulting
file to the original.

Yes, definitely. The HTML &entity; scheme is only usable in HTML, and
HTML-like formats. UTF-8 can be used in many more formats.

If that hadn't been it, the other thing I would have suggested, and is
probably worth remembering for the future, is whether your browsers are
set up to verify revocation of SSL certificates. That often fails, and
without giving you any clues as to what's going wrong.
