For F11 we're trying to work together on the same concept, we aren't doing competing ideas anymore. Our deadline for a decision on the visual concept (basically, how will we visually depict 'Leonidas') is February 1. Do you think there is a way we can integrate the idea of your helmet with a landscape of Greek architecture for the wallpaper, and maybe we could integrate the helmet in other artwork too? Do you have any ideas on what a landscape with the helmet integrated into it might look like? I do think based on the wallpaper poll results that we should try for a landscape for the wallpaper, but that doesn't mean we can't have a helmet placed in it or somehow work the idea of a helmet in it? I like the idea of having a helmet somewhere because Leonidas was from Sparta and Sparta was very militaristic, but at the same time a helmet is for protection so it's not too violent a symbol as you said. What do you think? Do you have ideas on how we can work together? ~m
How about four spears stuck in the ground, which are forming a totem like shape, with the helmet supported by or on top of the spear points? It could symbolize the 4 F's that make the basic support structure of Fedora, as well as be themed by the codename. -- -- ~Michael http://michaelbox.net

I think adding a helmet would be great. I have an idea of small bronze
Greek helmet laying on the ground - either on the bottom left on grass
(here I'd use some older helmet, let it blend with nature), while the
bigger temple being on the bottom right, or having the helmet laying on
one of the stairs leading to temple (if we make a temple with stairs;
here I'd use rather shiny new helmet).

Either way, my idea is focusing rather on the spiritual part of the
image, I'd draw it how it could look if the temple was new and still
used by old Greeks, perhaps around the columns could be some grapes or
some other plant growing, I can also imagine hot springs (with vapour
flowing up from the springs, creating a mist) and maybe forest or small
bushes nearby, possibly with Mt. Olympus being seen in a distance.
Though I am not sure if we'd be able to do such complex art from scratch
with inkscape; or if we'd be doing photo-realistic one, if we could get
hands on fitting and properly licensed photos... Maybe if I have enough
time I'll try to sketch the idea in inkscape, but do not expect
something that will look good >_<

Awesome, I look forward to it! I'm going to try to put something
together tonight too to push this idea further and we can critique each
other's sketches/mockups and figure out what parts work.

The Feb 1 (today :) ) deadline isn't for us to have beautiful polished
artwork, but to just to know what we'll be working on for the next few
weeks.

It seems like we are reaching a consensus on doing a Grecian landscape
with a helmet & columns and some natural elements like Olympus, vines,
etc., so I think we've pretty much met our goal which is great! :)

For the natural elements part, I believe olive trees could be an
addition, as they are symbols of glory & peace. In ancient Greece olive
was sacred.

Agreed. Olive trees are excellent choice for the theme.

Re: F11 visual concept idea - greek

Hi everybody !

I just wanted to mention that, after reading this thrad, I uploaded a few pictures I've made during a trip in Greece. I don't know if it is usable for graphical work, but I thought it could give some inspiration to someone.

Here is the url :

Besides that, you did a wonderful job on Fedora 10 and I'm looking forward the next step :)

(sorry for the bad english)

Here's [1][2] my first try in inkscape. Some notes:

The temple is made very simple for the begining, more details will need
to be added, also we'd probably need to chose slightly different
colouring and maybe slightly different proportions.

The helmet would probably need only small amount of extra detail added.

I've created really simple background and that would definitely need to
be replaced by something better looking. Also, unlike for the temple and
helmet, I've used open clipart images which do not fit the rest of the
image, so we'll need to create more detailed, 3D-looking images
ourselves. On the wiki [3] I've linked some photos which might serve as
reference. Also the hot springs look pretty odd as they are now. Maybe
adding some reflections, etc. would help.

Overall, I think the resultant image should have much less vivid colours
and it would be great if we could target more realistic looks (perhaps
some post-processing in gimp might help that). Also, I think it would be
interesting to change the shading during the day, it would be quite a
lot of extra work, but IMHO definitely doable and the result might be
pretty impressive.

Anyway, see the concept more like "I think the olive tree would be good
if it were placed here, there I'd like some log, ..." and as a base for
further development, should we go with this approach. Though I fully
realize that making 3D-looking art with perspective purely in inkscape
isn't an easy task.

I like how you put the elements in the image and the ability to play
with them (move, resize, etc.) I also think we *wont't* manage to come
with something realistic made completely with Inkscape, so we may have
to go with either photomanip and a realistic look or drawing and
stylization.

BTW, I guess not all of us noticed the cool and related 3D design posted
by Mola on IRC: http://mola.fedorapeople.org/fedora_river_004.jpg -
awesome, but still not realistic enough IMO.

We could play around using Inkscape and even Mola's renders
to figure out the composition of the image, then use
photomanip techniques to fill it in... that seems like it
would work better than what I've been doing, which is trying
to find an openly-licensed photo with a good composition and
working off of that.
