Signal 17 problem with ps command

Hello,

I am running procps-2.0.6-5 on Redhat 6.2.  The machine has been working just great until the other day.  Nothing was installed to my knowledge but all of a sudden when running the ps command I get:

Signal 17 caught by ps (procps version 2.0.6).

Please send bug reports to procps-bugs <at> redhat.com

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Floating point exception: top -d0

Hi,

According to the "top" man page on RedHat 7.2, this is the e-mail to post bug reports for "top". So here goes.

On my newly installed RedHat 7.2 system, if I type top -d0 I get this error message (my emphasis in bold):

 12:33am  up 9 min,  1 user,  load average: 0.40, 0.36, 0.15
50 processes: 48 sleeping, 2 running, 0 zombie, 0 stopped
Floating point exception 1.6% system,  0.2% nice, 97.3% idle

Essentially it just dumps out there. Interestingly enough, if I run it with strace or ltrace, the problem disappears.

This is using the procps-2.0.7-11 package on RedHat 7.2, with RPM updates to glibc, the kernel, and a few other things, all from the official RedHat update site. The hardware is a Dell PowerEdge 600SC, which contains an Intel Pentium 4.

I will be happy to provide further information upon request. Thank you for reading this.

'ps -C name' without -m shows all threads of the process ?

We have multithreaded process with number of threads
between 20 and 60 [and changing sometimes]. This is RedHat 8.

Suddenly out of blue, 'ps -C OurprOc' started
to show all threads of the process instead of 1 line.

'ps -l -C xxx' also showed many lines -- 1 per thread
-- although expected to show 1 line only. Looking at PPIDs
in 'ps -l -C xxx' -- it's definitely all threads of a single process.

Then, 10 minutes after, 'ps -C OurprOc' reverted
to normal: showing 1 line. There is no alias of ps to 'ps -m'
or like. The process was not even restarted, same pid. It has now
74 threads.

BTW: when ps showed incorrect output, the system was highly loaded,
and when ps reverted to normal, the load subsided. I don't know
it it's related.

Is this known bug in ps ?

The way thread grouping is done in RH8 is sort of hacky. it compares the
names and vm sizes of children. Since /proc reading is not atomic it is
possible that e.g. the vm size of a child thread changes inbetween reading
the parent and child data, this would cause problems like this. This is
also more likely to happen during high load.

In the future NPTL will solve this since we then have a threadgroup id.
