Couple more small changes to the Epson driver

1) I increased the density of matte black ink on the R2400 to match
the R800/R1800. It does appear to yield significantly darker
   black.

2) I changed the default breakpoint from unidirectional to
bidirectional to generate smoother output at very high resolutions
(1440x1440 and above on R2400; 2880x1440 and above on R800/R1800).

Minor request

Greetings;

Where, in that grand path between firefox, and one of my epson C8x
family printers, can one find the code that positions the header/footer
data that FF prefixes, or postfixes to each page it prints when one does
the pulldown and issues the print page(s) command from the FF menu?

I ask because I'm tired of trying to figure out what is being printed
in these areas.

For the header data, the top of the characters, and the left
justification seem to be ok, but the upper right corner is badly
clipped, as if it thinks the letter paper is about 8.55" wide.

Likewise, the bottom left, where it should say "Page xx of xx", the
"Page " is missing, off the left edge of the paper, and the whole line
is missing the bottom 2 dots of a 5x7 character matrix as its displaced
off the bottom of the paper, while the lower right phrase also has
portions of the last char lopped off over the right edge of the paper.

So what file do I play with to fix this?

If you're using 5.0.0-rc3, set the printer to Borderless.

On the R2400:
As I wrote previously (but very badly) the black printed with matte ink
is lighter when selecting "matte ink" than "photo ink" (always with the
MK cartridge). I selected this by error!

The patch to escp2-papers.c don't change anything.
I am trying to set parameters to obtain good results in B&W With
default settings the light area are too clear (with a 21 steps file
the 20% patch is white. What is the better setting to use: Gamma,
black curve... ? Could you give me an advice about this?

The file doc/gutenprint-options seems to be disappeared in the last
snapshot (and may be previous). Is it normal?

Gray transitions settings are not available on R2400 ?

Sincerely,

OK. However, when I looked at it more closely, I could get darker
black by increasing the amount of matte black, so this helped anyway.

What settings are you currently using?

It's moved into the release notes (NEWS).

It was with default settings:

InkSet String True "ultra3matte"
PrintingDirection String True "Unidirectional"
MediaType String True "WaterColorRadiant"
PrintingDirection String True "Unidirectional"
Gamma: 1, density: 1
Brightness 1, Contrast 1
LinearContrast True True
DitherAlgorithm String True "HybridEvenTone"
ImageType String True "None"

(without the last patch, I'll apply it after sending this email)

Sincerely,

The last patch will give you darker grays overall with matte black ink.

Hi Robert,

I am curious about why this achieves a better result, as I thought
unidirectional was the better option at high res.

Does it add some "mechanical dither", that reduces patterning or something?

Paper feed in R2400

Hello!

I have a trouble with the single sheet feeder (rear) on the R2400.
I thinked that the problem was caused by the paper but I can reproduce
it.

On first print loading is good, printing occurs, paper is ejected.
on next print loading is good but when printing the paper is going
back and I have a loading error. I eject the paper ('roll button'),
aknownledge/cancel the error (button 'sheet/trash') .
I can retry ... after few tries (5 ore more) it works! If I
power-down/power-up I can print again.

May be a reset command can solve this issue?
