[Printing-user-general] The mailing lists are replaced by web forums now!

Hi,

we have replaced the user mailing lists of linuxprinting.org by the FSG
OpenPrinting User Forums [1] now which are web forums based on the
Phorum [2] web forum system.

This way we make it much easier and more attractive for you to ask
questions and discuss problems of printing with Posix-style operating
systems. Also the search of already existing discussions will be
simplified a lot by this platform.

But note that the implementation of the forum system is not yet
completed. We plan to have a single sign-on for Wiki, forums, and
Bazaar. Until the forums are full integrated for that, you will have to
register at first in the Wiki [3] and then in the forums [4] using the
same user name and password. If you are subscribed in one or of the
mailing lists, please use the same e-mail address for the forum
registration, so that we can later on assign your old mailing list
postings to you.

The user mailing lists, including this one, will be deactivated soon,
but the archives will be kept active until they are converted to forum
postings. So you will still be able to browse the old list postings. Got
to the list info page from [5] and then click the archives link to get
to the list archives.

Please do not post to the mailing lists any more. You do not need to
unsubscribe from the mailing lists.

[Printing-user-general] printer work with lp, but not lpr

Many thanks. This was very helpful.

I was seeing the "waiting for printer to finish" message and was getting
only the first page of the file printed. Using "lp" instead of "lpr"
solved the problem.

We've looked around for cupsys-bsd but haven't found it. But we're
operational without it, anyway.

Thanks for posting this so the rest of us could see it!!

Vicky

[Printing-user-general] Multiple Copies , SMB, and Pcounter on a Toshiba estudio 3511

Hi

We have a print release station (windows 2000) using Pcounter software connected to a Toshiba estudio 3511 copier. I've installed the PPD drivers for the copier and it works great with one small problem, when you ask for multiple copies, the release station only recognized it as one copy, it will then print multiple copies but only charges the user for one. When I asked the release station support people, they mentioned they've seen this problem when the printer driver isn't 100% compatable.

Any ideas how I can fix this?

Some info:

Suse 10.1,
PPD Driver: TOSHIBA_EST4511_451c_CUPS.ppd
Samba 3.0.22-13.18
cups 1.1.23-39

Thanks
Jayson

[Printing-user-general] Help getting gs / lpr working again

Hey folks, I can use a little help getting my print system back in order. It's got to be
something simple (I suspect page resolution) but nobody seems to know what's wrong!

I have an HP LaserJet 4M+ connected to my parallel port, used it for years, everything's
been great. Then I upgraded Debian from 3.0 to 3.1 and in the process something very wrong
has happened to the print system. The upgrade had installed Xprint (which I've since
removed, thinking it was the problem) but not CUPS. I don't think I need anything fancy
since I just sent PostScript the printer via lpr.

But now what happens is that the top of the page is cut off. This happens even when I
create a PostScript file with gs!

In the past, I was able to convert PPM files like this:

convert a.ppm a.ps

But now when I do that, the resultant file is missing about 1/3 of the page at the top!
(In gv, the papersize is set to auto and it defaults to "BBox" ... the entire page of the
document does display, but it's huge and when I change the paper type to "letter" the top
half is cut out again.

The upgrade changed my GhostScript to version 8.01 (the gs-gpl package) and I think that's
got something to do with it but haven't found the proper config. This is depressing. I can
really use some help!

TIA

[Printing-user-general] RAW printing screws up printer

Sorry if this is a newbie question, but I don't know enough to have been
able to sort it out after going through various man pages, the CUPS
documentation and the general archives.

The raw print command lp -o raw <filename> prints out OK on a
local printer, but after that I can't print normally from any program,
say OpenOffice or kate, using that printer (or any other on my network).
CUPS shows "printing" on the printer while the printer itself stays
completely idle. Getting it working again is a real pain.

'Beh' (the Backend Error Handler) looks as if it is meant to deal with
this sort of problem, but since I don't understand where the problem
comes from, I'm unsure which printer queue 'beh' ought to be attached
to: is it the raw queue? would that stop the freezing of the normal queue?
is it the normal queue? what would be reasonable values for the options?
if that causes the job to be discarded, how does one re-establish normal
behaviour?

Or am I misunderstanding completely?

Any advice would be most welcome.

I'm using CUPS-1.1.23 (-11.2.102mdk version) on Mandrake 10.2 (LE2005)
with Linux 2.6.11-13smp kernel.

[Printing-user-general] CUPS Tally MT645

Hi I'm searching for a way to use my Mannesman Tally MT645 with CUPS in
Suse Linux (9.x, 10.x)

The printer is compatible with IBM proprinter III and epson FX.
It will work with Epson FX but the printing quality sucks.
The ProPrinter II that comes with CUPS doesnt work. Is there
a Proprinter III driver i can use? Or an MT645 driver for CUPS?
I' searching the net and couldn't find any of those...

Thanks in advance.

[Printing-user-general] New test version of libinklevel available / Testers needed

Hello,

I have just released a new test version of libinklevel. Due to the
great variety of printers available I need your help testing it.
Libinklevel is a library for retrieving the ink level of a printer
connected to a linux computer via parallel port or USB. HP, Epson and
Canon printers are supported.

What has changed?
The Epson code has been rewritten to support more recent printers and
to get rid of a bug which caused blocking of libinklevel when one ink
cartridge was completely empty. Support for the Canon MP360 has been
added. An alternate USB printer device file location has been added.

The new release can be found here:

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/libinklevel/libinklevel-0.6.6rc4.tar.gz?download

For testing it you need the ink command line utility. It can be found
here:

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/ink/ink-0.3.2rc2.tar.gz?download

It will work only with this version of "ink". Please send me the
complete debugging output from the "ink" program.

libinklevel homepage: http://libinklevel.sf.net
ink homepage: http://ink.sf.net

Thanks,

Markus

[Printing-user-general] Colour PCL from PS/PDF

I want to be able to convert a colour PDF/PS file to an equivalent PCL file.
I have tried using cljet5c as the driver in gs, but the quality when viewed via pcl6 is no where near as good as the original.....

I know it sounds stupid, but we have an Excel/Word doc that we can create a PS/PDF file from - we then want to use that file as a form 'template' in a program. We have the 'knowledge' to be able to overprint the template with 'data'  (using PCL commands) - to produce an order form, or invoice type document.
So what where doing is:
  • Create a PDF/PS template from a standard Word/Excel document
  • Use a PCL version of that template in a program and then overlay the template with data using PCL commands
  • Despool the combined template/data with pcl6 to create a PDF output.
The quality of using the lj4dith/p drivers gives good results in monochrome, but really we want to be able to print full colour output.

Does any of that make sense?

Regards,

Steve Tucknott
