Fwd: [PATCH 2.6.0-test3] ppp_generic.c: fix PPP compression

Hi,

I neglected to send this to linux-ppp and Paul Mackerras when I sent
it to the LKML. Sorry about that.

Please apply if it looks OK.

Thanks,

Steve (remove "nospam4me." to reply)

Subject: [PATCH 2.6.0-test3] ppp_generic.c: fix PPP compression

Hi all,

A typo in ppp_generic.c broke handling of CCP_CONFACK messages and
thus PPP compression.... this one-liner fixes it (worked for me,
anyway). Patch is against 2.6.0-test3.

Thanks,

Steven Ihde (remove "nospam4me." to reply)

A similar patch has already gone to Dave Miller.

Thanks anyway,
Paul.

PPPoE Oops with 2.4.22-rc

I'm getting Oopses at reboots while pppoe module loaded.

Linux 2.4.22-pre* and -rc*
pppd version 2.4.2b3

The ksymoops output attached, more details at
http://gzp.odpn.net/tmp/linux-pppoe-oops/

ksymoops 2.4.9 on i686 2.4.22-rc2-gzp1. Options used
     -V (default)
     -k /proc/ksyms (default)

     -o /lib/modules/2.4.22-rc2-gzp1/ (default)
     -m /usr/src/linux/System.map (default)

Warning: You did not tell me where to find symbol information. I will
assume that the log matches the kernel and modules that are running
right now and I'll use the default options above for symbol resolution.
If the current kernel and/or modules do not match the log, you can get
more accurate output by telling me the kernel version and where to find
map, modules, ksyms etc. ksymoops -h explains the options.

How to know that a ppp connection is using software compression ?

Hi,

How can I know that a ppp connection has negotiated software compression
(bsd etc) with the ISP ?

Thanks in advance

It probably has not. Most ISPs run software(eg Microsoft) which does not
support any of the comressions that Linux supports (bsd, etc) Also,
since your modem already compresses, software compression is useful if
you have a slow connection between your modem and your computer (or the
isp has) or you are connecting over a non-compressing link-- ethernet,
etc. Ie, it usually is not very useful.

Anyway, to finally answer your question, enable debugging, ( put
debug
into /etc/ppp/options and put the line
daemon.*;local2.* /var/log/ppplog
into /etc/syslog.conf and then do
killall -1 syslogd

Then after a ppp connection look into /var/log/ppplog for the lines
which talk about CCP and see if compression is enabled.

Alternatively, use the 'pppstats -z' command to display compression
statistics. If the numbers are all zero, then CCP isn't doing
anything.

Connection problem: PPP and mobile phones

I'm trying to set up a test site to use the WAP gateway (which I have
succesfully built -- www.kannel.com). However, in trying to make a PPP
connection from my WAP phone to the Linux server I get an LCP terminated by
peer error.

For outbound traffic I know the PPP works -- I can use it to connect to an
ISP. However, when I try to use my 6310 to dial in, I get the LCP
termination error. What I find strange is that I don't get any LCP
termination request packets (LCP TermReq), just the error message that the
peer closed the connection.

Here is the PPP stuff from the log file:

By the way, the duplicated messages here mean that your
/etc/syslog.conf file is slightly misconfigured. There are two rules
that match the messages of interest, and both rules put the messages
into the the same file.

This is curious. Why do you have _some_ of the debug level messages
and not others? There should have been a lot of PPP negotiation
messages interspersed in there, but they're missing.

modem multiplexing mode?

Hi,

Is there any way to send additional traffic (AT commands) to serial port
(/dev/ttyS1 (COM2) in my example) when ppp is attached to it, thus
providing something as a modem multiplexing mode/protocol, since
/dev/ttyS1 is locked by pppd and used by ppp modules.

I tried to use /dev/ttyS12 as virtual port for COM2, which would
allow sending of additional data flow to COM2 independently from the
data flow which is already sent trough /dev/ttyS1 (ppp traffic).

So, I expect write to /dev/ttyS12 to activate rs_interrupt_single method
which does the actual write in serial driver.
Once I'm in rs_interrupt_single method I
would redirect the incoming user space data to TX lines for COM2.

The write to /dev/ttyS12 fails with EIO Input/Output error, I suppose
because there is no UART defined for this device and some initialization
stuff doesn't go trough.

I'm wondering if there is any way to activate rs_interrupt_single method
in serial.c or for /dev/ttyS12 or in other words is there any way to
have more (virtual) tty device files for the same COM?

Thanks for any advice...

Dalibor Kranjcic.
